Why quantify? It's either none or not-none.
So far not-none is winning hands down!

    Yep.

So far there are those of us that have bikes that this is true of. There
are those of us that have cars that this true of.

Just need the amount of fuel being "wasted" to compare. Hope you have a
small thimble to collect it in!

    Why? Why?

If you can't quantify you may as well claim that it'll give you arse cancer!

Does the amount make the fact any less a fact?

Hamish, I believe that the original statement was made not to disparage
daytime headlight use because it was a serious waste of fuel, but to
point out that such use was so ineffective that even the infinitesmally
tiny amount of fuel consumed was more significant.

OK; daytime headlights on will increase your risk of arse-cancer[1]
    BIG[2] arse cancer!

  8. It was a feature on the GS450 too. And for good measure, to make sure
you didn't produce too much more electricity, it'd make sure your stator
    got fried too.

Ok so I tested it myself.

5.7 Lt EFI Holden in diagnostics mode.
All Lights off idle speed ~803
All Lights on idle speed ~803
All lights off fuel rate 2.68L/hr
All lights on fuel rate 2.68L/hr

    Yet to be convinced Nev..

  11. It may turn over at a constant rate, but it will need more force to make
it turn over if it is producing electricity - or, in the case of an a/c,
    running the compressor.

OK, so Clem has pointed out that this lights on = extra fuel business
won't apply to my bike. You have pointed out that it won't apply to my
car. Now you're trying to convince me using examples involving my
    bicycle...

No no; he said that the lights=drop-in-revs isn't happening in your car
because the computer compensating by using MORE fuel (same as Michelle's car
    does but apparently more seamlessly).

But the diagnostics indicate that it's not using more fuel... or if it
is, it's less than 1 decilitre per hour per 800 rpm, which is probably
as close to negligible as it is possible to measure because even driving
over a small bump on the road makes a much more significant change to
    the consumption rate.

    ....yeah, but...

The torque required to turn the pulley for the alternator is going to be,
what? Bugger all. On the road at cruising speed (as in rpm) is higher,
torque remains the same value. You'd probably be losing more fuel in
    resistance due to tyre pressure!

    Hammo

PS I just tried it in my car and it used no fuel for the 10 minute I had
    the lights on!

Bicycle is a good example , it becomes harder to peddle when more lights
are added , more energy is required ( fuel) and there is the answer

hey don't blame me.. I just press this button here.. and that button
there.. turn that thing there... and it all comes up on the dash...
After reading your previous post I remembered my car had digital tacho
and instantaneous fuel consumption available and I went out to the car
expecting to be convinced you were right..

So the two vehicles in my garage with alternators are not good examples
of how an alternator increases fuel consumption, but the only one
without an alternator is a good example...
