Do we have any advanced riding instructors hiding in the woodwork
here? I've decided that if I'm going to be a shit rider, I might as
well be a *safe* shit rider and thus could do with a bit of advanced
    training.

Email addy is valid and unmunged.

have a look at the Bikesafe site - the services offered vary by county
    http://www.bikesafe.co.uk/Bikesafe/Bikesafe2000/england/england.html

I did the Gloucestershire one some years ago and learnt some useful stuff.
Doing an observed ride through the Wye Valley with a janitor behind was
good fun. His briefing said, "stick to the limits in villages etc but make
good progress in the nationals." Excellent feedback.

  4. Wash your mouth out with Gunk! Anyone offering 'advice' on advanced
motorcycling cannot be called an "instructor" because they are not licensed
by the government in the same way that ADI's (Approved Driving Instructors)
are licensed by (through?) the DSA (Driving Standards Agency). The preferred
description is "observer". We are also discouraged from using the dreaded
"T" word (training) for the same reason. Daft, but that's political
    correctness for you!

Best thing is to look up your nearest IAM or RoSPA m/c group via..

    http://www.iam.org.uk/IAMGroups/regions.php?PHPSESSID=fdcd54357d72ee5879941142dff11bdc

    or

    http://www.roada.org.uk/

There will now follow a great flurry of postings from people who will tell
you either that advanced training is a load of toss, given by a bunch of
complete twats, or that it's all common sense and a waste of time. They will
probably also tell you that a few track days, and learning to do wheelies
and stoppies, would be far more useful. Well, you could do all of these
things - they are not mutually exclusive!

All I can suggest is that you give it a go and make up your own mind. It's
kept me alive and in one piece these past 6 years and some tens of thousands
of miles, but what do I know? ;-)

Two weekends (four days) with Dave and Goeff in Bristol taught me a shed
load more then 12 months with the IAM.

If Dave Corden is still interested this year, I will probably try and
organise another set of training weekends with him in the Summer.

If you can wait that long, almost everyone who's gone has appeared to learn
something from it... price has been reasonable, conversation is good
and IMO, much more suited to safe riding based around the way _you_ ride,
whilst still based on decent theory.

Avoid the IAM. It's a fucking, boring, pointless waste of time.

I suffered a couple of rideouts and meets with a group of people who
swallowed the highway code and saw it as their mission to take the fun out
    of biking.

When an instructor told me to put one foot down and one foot on the peg when
stationary because it 'looked neater' I realised I must leave before I
    started killing.

Any session with a Class 1 bike cop is the way to go.

dwb was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
Might be interested, last year it clashed with my holidays, maybe I'm
    luckier this year.

I'll second that. I did a BikeSafe course in SE London, and the police
riders' attitude was equally healthy. No condescending twaddle, lots based
on experience, including scraping people off the road. I might have been a
tad lucky in that our 'escort' was on a Fireblade rather than the standard
issue BMW; we did 'progress' rather well....... At £25 a day including
    lunch it's an absolute steal!!
