    KC being binned, that is.

That leaves the field pretty even, it seems. On another tack -
whatever happened to Oliver Letwin? I thought he'd want it ... or is
he biding his time for another change before the next General,
    perchance?

Letwin: did a deal with Cameron ages ago
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4645769.stm

KC: Hopefully he'll take a front bench role with DC so we get to see him
lob a few more missiles across the despatch box before he croaks. He's a
    **** but an entertaining one.

LF: quite amusing interview on BBC. He implied that DD's supporters should
desert to the LF camp as it is their best chance to defeat DC.

DD: seemed to be struggling with arithmetic

Bookmakers dont have it as an even contest:
DC 2/7, DD 7/2, LF 15/2 (oddschecker aka Sporting Life)

I saw David Davies on the Andrew Marr (sp) programme a Sunday or so ago and
was actually very impressed with his one to one interview. Liam Fox didn't
look good when interviewed and David Cameron just looks and sounds a bit
    sleazy/smarmy to me.

He should be more roundly condemned for being Lamont's "special

Once I'd have viewed this as the dream ticket. Well, that is if Cameron
is as much of a wet as he appears.

However I've really got no appetite for Tory politics any more and find
it hard to criticise Blair (with the exception of Iraq). God knows
    what's going on anymore.

Until the Tories sort out their membership they will remain fucked- this
seems completely clear to me and it's only copying what Labour did in
    the 90s ffs.

gomez emerged from their own little world to say
Commentary this evening has attributed Ken's failure, to get younger Tory
MPs on side, to his lack of schmooze. Apparently, the quality of his
canapés are more important than a track record.

Cameron appears to have this in spades. Time will tell if there is any
    substance under the froth.

Wasn't that what happened with Labour in 1997? Wasn't it precisely
because they had no experience in governing that they were trusted and
because they had the same policies that they got elected?

I doubt he'll be given long enough- they need a purge of the membership
    not a new leader.

They're all fucking mad and learn nothing from history. Which is
strange because I thought they were meant to be intelligent. I suppose
being in the thick of it it's hard to maintain any independent views.

They have a dreadful (recent) history of pushing aside their best
prospects and latching onto someone for all of the wrong reasons.

Clarke, Portillo, Hesletine could have all done so much more for the
party than Hague, Duncan-Smith and whoever. The next leader is unlikely
    to be much better.

Unless Cameron teams up with Clarke he's losing one of his best
performers; he should get Clarke to play a Willie Whitehall type role.
Unfortunately that's true- we should never have put cameras in the
    house.

  15. [ken clarke out of tory leadership contest]
I think some of them are intelligent. It's just that as a party they
have not got past the Thatcher years because she's still around to
"remind" people. I also think they don't actually want to *really* gain
power - they are more content in settling scores and fighting internal
battles that are of no consequence to the voters.
They need someone who can provide them with coherent leadership and a
policy direction that Blair cannot or would not wish to steal but that
voters will go for. That debate is far from over for those who are
    right of centre.

I don't see anything in the leadership contest that addresses the policy
issue thus making it even less relevant to the general public.
I think I agree with Bear that Cameron will need to be his own man and
not to be actually or perceived to be in debt to or in hock with Ken
Clarke. A terrible shame but the right wing loonies in the party and the
press would have a field day - cue a well timed remark from the
Chingford Strangler at a crucial moment.

I'd like to see some sort of actual parliamentary opposition. Howard's
question to Blair in PMQs last week was absolutely brilliant -
unfortunately no longer on BBC News Player.
I don't think this is the problem. I think it is sensible that the
Commons is broadcast. I'm more concerned about the Americanisation of
political coverage and the trivialisation of politics overall.

not be surprised to hear that I agree with him about the use of the
