Paging Champ

Yeah, but i'd fannied around for most of the day, and instead of
bimbling up, I wanted to get there before it went dark, so pinned it
up the M25/M1

I've done the A404->High Wycombe->Aylesbury route a few times before,
but once you've done the godawful drag through Aylesbury, and
trundling through Leighton Buzzard to catch the Woburn road, i've lost
the will to live.

An alternative is Aston Clinton, Long Marston, Mentmore, Wing,
Stewkley. Nice little country lanes (at least they used to be) & avoids
Aylesbury & Buzzard completely.

I used to do that route twice an evening every day on my moped when I
was 16 - I lived in Aston Clinton & girlfriend lived in Stewkley.
