OK, so there's a rear facing Gatso speed camera on a local dual
carriageway. It's been there for 8 or more years. It is on the east
    bound lane, on the verge.

This evening I was going west-bound in my car and naturally I was
observing the speed limit... ish; about 75 indicated in a 50 (so
something like 65-70 true speed I suppose).

So, I was rather galled when the fucking camera flashed me (twice.)
It's never done this before. It's clearly me that triggered it 'cos
there was no one in the east bound lane and I was the fastest thing in
    the west bound lane.

So... have the fuckers upgraded the Gatso cameras to photo across dual
carriageways now, or is it one of those things[1][2]

[1] I've heard you can trigger them in the opposite direction and have
tried many times on a bike but never succeeded.
[2] I shall be rather upset if my clean license is stained by points...

There's an older model GATSO in Brighton that goes off in the facing
direction. Apparently if they run out of film the older ones go off on
    oncoming traffic - apparently.

Either way I've set that one off a fair number of times and never heard
anything so if I were you I wouldn't be bothered about it.

There's one near Chiswick That does that. I've set it off loads of

Thanks, but I think I'll have a few more drinks and consider necklacing
the fucker later on this evening 'just to be on the safe side'. I'd
consider it my charitable act for this year.

Are there distance measuring lines on you side of the road? If not, I
    wouldn't worry.

I've always fancied paintballing them. It just appeals to me to cruise
down the road popping of paint pellets at the lenses.

Juvenile I'm sure you'll agree, but somehow satisfying.

I've often wondered if a big clay doughnut, maybe a foot across, with a pile
of thermite[1] in the middle would have an interesting (and also very
charitable) effect if one were to slap it on top of a Gatso and light it
up... The fingery-picture ones would be more of a task, though, as they fire
the pics off to a central (and secret) location as they take 'em (

Yes, but these have been there for eight + years and it's never flashed
    me before.

I think I'll go with the "don't worry about it" strategy.

A small cone of plastic explosive on the top, makes a small hole in
the case and minces the contents. IIRC that's how some disgruntled
    French guy did it.

With that kind of heat, I don't suppose it matters. Stick a can on top and
not much on the inside would survive for long.

Either way, there's not much you can do until (unless) you get a NIP. Report
back on 2 weeks with a yeah or nay on the NIP and this thread could go on
    forever:)

Where do you get the magnesium ribbon? And would a good old fashion
    sparkler suffice?

    <cough>
You want to be very very careful thinking like this.
Get caught using thermite on a Gatso and you will probably score 3 to 6
    years hard time.

Much much safer and more obvious to passing motorists to spray them
    liberally with expanding foam.

The one in Botley used to get this treatment, or so I heard.

If you were to be stupid enough a steel beer can would make an excellent
receptical and the long powder fuse found in many a firework would
ignite it, using a long taper of course.

You can mix a little thermite with other stuff for interesting results.
For instance the contents of a FOAD firework and 100 mesh copper powder
make a huge flash and *many* cubic yards of dense smoke. The sort of
thing you might toss through the door of somewhere which had given some
    scoolboys a hard time. Perhaps.

The **** chased us from near Glasgow Green all the way to the Gorbals,
where his bravery gave up ;o)
