does the French law that came in last year requiring "all vehicles" to
carry a hi-viz jacket and a warning triangle apply to bikes, or are
they exempt as in civilised countries?

Pretty sure it doesn't apply to bikes.

I'm also "pretty sure", but just wondered if anyone had a reference to
    official confirmation of same.

If the answer is "yes", does that mean you will actually take a hi-viz
    & a triangle?

I wouldn't, but I'd take a copy of all my documents, just in case!

**** no. I might consider it in the car, but not on a bike.
good plan, though I don't actually have a copy of the V5 for the bike
    yet...

Then again, I've never taken a copy of a V5 for any vehicle I've taken
onto the continent. Driving licence, probably[1], insurance details,
    possibly.

[1] mainly because I keep the plastic bit of my licence in my wallet
    all the time anyway.

**** no - just wondering. I only just noticed the legislation warning
when I was checking on the Eurotunnel site to see if I can get a
refund (I can't, though can transfer it theoretically to another date
    within one year)

    Only in the UK.

The in-laws have one of these fantastic little machines
    http://www.secmavehicule.com/photos/08_options/009_350_av_an.html
which has a complete roof and doors, and which they trail behind their
motorhome and use for getting around while they leave the big thing on
a site. In the UK it has to be classed as a car, so is taxed
accordingly (around 120 quid, IIRC), but if it were french registered
it would be dealt with entirely differently, as quads are recognised
as not being cars, which may seem obvious but has clearly escaped UK
    lawmakers.

Well that may well be the way of it, of course. I'm not sure, though,
if they're just classed the same as bikes by default or if they're
    something different again.

I think you mean that fact that it could be classed as a car has totally
escaped the tax lawmakers in other countries.
