Damage to the starter ring gear *and* inside of the engine casing. Run a
mile, and that's before you notice that this is coming from DK.

Starter ring gear - if it's the one on the flywheel, which is what I
suspect it is otherwise they wouldn't punt it out relatively cheaply -
would be a gearbox out job on this bike.

Which happens to mean that you'll have to take the whole fucker apart
after hanging it from the rafters. That's an 8-10 hour job minimum for
someone who's working on BMWs all the time and can rebuild them in his
sleep with one hand tied behind his back.

With Joe Average Punter this is more a case of another ebay ad for an
R1100S "in parts". Unless you're Nige, listen to my advice and don't do
it. Even I'm not stupid enough to buy something like this.

Ohh, shame I didn't see it when I was wandering round their boutique a
    couple of weeks ago.

Why do I expect that the sentence "We bought it as a bike to do-up and
sell but as with many of the bikes here, the time and resources just
weren't available to devote to it." should in fact read "We bought it as
a bike to do-up and sell but soon realised that it would be a lot more
expensive to fix than we first realised."?

It's OK, I'd already broken into a trot.
    :)

Anyway, as T pointed out, I still haven't finished the "jobs about the
house" that she wants me to do, and apparently I've got to get that
other "old BMW that only needs a new coil" running before I start
    another project. ;-)

I think he's mainly a K-ish expert, the Rs are even worse. I should
know, I had a few of each.
Fair enough. That would be the one that's waiting for a certain boxhead
to get in gear and finally order that coil, isn't it?

I don't know the R series at all.

If it was 'just taking off the clutch and gearbox' then that's a weekend
gone by the time I've messed around tidying the garage, finding the
    tools etc.

    500 quid maybe. But 900+???

If you've thrown one down the road the bodywork looked sweet enough
    though...

Depends on how much they charge, don't they? That said, from what I
remember the R is even worse for some reason but I don't have the
workshop manual here to confirm what it is.
