Sigh, no, but there are PSU's in audio amps, with big smoothing
electrolytics. I wouldn't want one of those discharged through me
    either ...

The power rail in Champ's amp is probably about 30V.
You wouldn't even feel it through your fingers.
You would have to put your tongue on +30V and your knob on -30V to get a
    shock worth reporting.

Ok. i'll throw caution to the wind next time.

Maybe i've spent too much time poking around the back of old telly's
which gives you a natural caution.

You really don't want to be fucking around with LOPTs or discharging
old TV CRTs, believe me. My dad's a TV engineer and I learnt the hard
way when I was about 8 yo.

    Determined, eh ?

    .... how many volts ?

You could have a 100,000 uF capacitor at 24volts in a hi-fi which
    wouldn't even tickle

A puny little 1uF 250 v capacitor would wake you up

I have my own version of percussive maintenance: several years ago I
bought an old Xeta-1 home cinema amp for use simply as an audio amp. A
few months later it developed an intermittent o the RH speaker. I
found that lifting the amp up and banging it down hard once or twice
usually fixes it for another few months.

The fault is (I think) a dry joint on a ribbon cable header. The
trouble is it's edge-on behind the front panel and would require
either a long (and preferebly bent) soldering iron tip or major
disassembly from access. The cable itself, oddly (from past
    experience) seems fine.

I've probably told this tale before, but a mate of mine used to work on
a particular radar set in t'army that had an intermittent problem with a
sticking relay. Hitting the case just *there* would unstick the relay
and everyone could get back to the serious business of killing
    foreigners.

A new officer arrived and disapproved strongly of his squaddies hitting
government property. He insisted on a proper solution to the problem.

My mate installed a large, clearly labelled, "RESET" button which, when
pressed, would restore normal operation. It had a little plastic flip-up
cover, and everything. Officer was happy, normal operation was restored.

Hitting the button energised a large solenoid that would whack the case
    just *there*...
