That old barge of mine needs its clutch repairing/restoring.
It's done about 50K and I gather this is normal maintainance.
Recently I have noticed a certain delay between right hand
activity and road speed, so I'm making assumptions about the
    clutch.

Is this a task for an inexperienced mechanic?

I put a new clutch into a /7 about 10 years ago. If you have tools and a
    shed, it's not too bad.

  3. Easy, but you really need to arrange a sensible working height for it,
makes it soooo much easier to work on.

Start with the clutch cable, is it ok. If they get really gunged up and
stiff then it could be to blame. Check the adjustment at the arm on the
rear of the gearbox and at the bars too obviously.

    Failing that.

    rear wheel out.
    final drive box off.
disconnect drive shaft UJ (12 point ring spanner)
    swinging arm out
gearbox out after removing carbs and airbox

You need something to get the clutch plate centred to refit the gearbox
(there is a tool but a right size mandrel does)

check the thrust bearing on the clutch actuating arm at the rear of the
gearbox. they wear and break up. replace it if in doubt

if the gearbox input seal is leaking or if the box seems stiff, that
rebuild is a job for someone who knows, the shaft endfloats are shimmed

if the crank output shaft seal is leaking it can be replaced in situ
    with the correct drift

That's a comrehensive list. The cable set-up is good.
I see many operations there that I could screw up.
I'll get it to a man who knows, Roy Gardner near Preston,
knows his stuff and charges accordingly.

    Thank you.

It's a simple enough job but what do you do when something more
complicated is discovered and you have a dismantled bike on the bench.

That's just the scenario I want to avoid.

    What bench?
