So were you on duty at the weekend? how did the final pre ops open day go?
I believe tens of thousands were expected

  2. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Hog
Ivan's under a bit of pressure at the moment.

But that's only to be expected when you've just created a mini black
hole and it's eating the planet.

  4. No, unfortunately; I couldn't justify the time and travel
expenses. Which is a pity, as it now means I'll probably never get to
see the experiment in the cavern. Guess there's a chance I might get
into the electronics chamber at some stage, though.

I only got my new passport last week (complete with my first RFID
chip), so it would have been a bit expensive to buy last-minute tickets, too.

I'm not sure how many people they could get through in a day,
although of course the other experiments were taking their share of the
    expected numbers too.

    I read now 60,000 visitors!

Are you not a permanent member of staff there once it goes live? I thought
you were working with the detector arrays pre and post construction.

  8. No, I'm contract staff at Brunel (until the end of September; the
rolling grant continues so there's not _too_ much danger I won't be re-hired
although a colleague on a different project always has trouble getting a
    new contract).

I've worked on the detectors, and various aspects of software for
getting the data out and analysed. I'm currently working on a new method
for automatically comparing two-dimensional histograms (I've done it; now
trying to get the draft report approved, but the referees want extensive
changes/additions). The grant calls for me to change my focus now --
along with the rest of the group -- to "exploitation", i.e. analysis of
data looking for scientific results. I'm just about to rebuild/update
a server that we use as the User Interface to Grid jobs submission (latest
versions of our software require Scientific Linux 4 and it's running 3)
so that we can get analysis jobs running on a routine basis.

I will be expected to spend some time on-site "taking shifts" I
expect, but given 2,000+ people in the collaboration and maybe only 8
or so (possibly only 2 or 3) to actually babysit the machine the shift
periods may not be too frequent. A lot of the babysitting will be done
by remote control, too; there's a Remote Operations Centre at Fermilab
which will probably do most of the monitoring during their daytime
    (roughly 1700-0100 CERN time).
