I have a Sony Vaio TX1-XP 2005 vintage with a damaged screen. Where can I
buy a new screen to fit myself at or close to a decent trade price?

I woudn't bother. It'll cost you more than its worth. Use it for something
that you don't need the display for.

These guys http://www.ologic.co.uk/ put a 4:3 15" screen in a Vaio for about
    £130.
The widescreen display will obviously be more but it could be worth a look

Try Ebay I got a screen for an Asus, took a while though, 2 months IIRC,
before the right size came up, cost me about £40 all in, including plastics
etc. which were fucked after travelling in panniers for a few thousand miles
