Were you thinking of the Mont Blanc tunnel? They are charging over E22 for
bikes to pass. It was a 90 min wait to get through on Sunday. They enforce a
70kph limit and 150m spacing. It really isn't worth going out of your way.
I will take the St Bernard pass (road) next time.

The Aosta valley is worth a day or two of time however. To the North of the
town of Aosta is an alpine road leading up through Ollomont to Glacier.
Already pretty high, the road ends but there is a good walking track on up
    into the clouds.

Glacier has a field for camping out, if you happen to have a tent.

What time of day was that (and was this FR -> IT or IT -> FR)?

Last time I went through it was over 100mph with full Plod approval -
they were closing the tunnel and wanting empty pronto - I was waved past
by a very nice plod over double white lines with the indication in no
uncertain terms to give it full beans(1) and get out of there.

    One of life's better moments.

    (1) well full beans in terms of BMW R80 beans

It was IT-FR but the queue was about as long both ways. Sat mid morning.

There was discussion recently about volumes of trucks on EU roads. Geneva to
Metz I counted less than 30 passed going North all day. That's a lot of
road. Milan to Bologne Monday not much different.

Tunnel to York - several hundreds.

In fact the only place I saw many was approaching Calais. I can guess where
    the feckers were going.

The fuckers stay off the autoroutes to avoid tolls. This pissed me off
going from Chalon en Champagne to Reims and then Reims to Laon the
following day. So much so, that I gave up using the northwards N44 and got
on the autoroute to the Tunnel.

I'll be passing through on a Friday, in the early afternoon I should
imagine. I may use the MB on the way back, but it's more than likely
I'll take a longer but more ambitious route home via a few more
    countries.

Cheers, but I'm not bothered about the cost or the queue, I want to do
the MB tunnel by bike and I'm going to. Maybe next time I'll go a
different route, but this time it's the MB for me so I can cross
    another thing off my list.
