You're right, that is definitely a C model. But they talk about tax
exemption and stuff. I wonder how it got registered as a '72? I *think*
the A came out in 73 (mine was manufactured n 73 and 1st registered
    early 1975 on an 'N').

    Something fishy there.

BTW the workshop manual picture on that page shows an A model (same
    colours as mine).

    That's not a 1972 model. I had a RD250 "torque induction" (B or C ?) and
    that was a 1976 - 'P' reg.
That one on ebay came *after* my model. Looks like an 'E'.

Absolutely spot on the money there. That's most definitely 1976-1978
RD250C bodywork, and the C sidepanels won't fit an A or B frame as the
mountings are in completely different places and the shape of the frame
doesn't allow them to fit, so you're looking at a C or D frame there
too. The clocks are from a C model too, as is everything else about the
    bike.

I'd be very wary, it looks almost certainly like a ringer to me. As TOG
    says, "Walk away".

Have you emailed the seller - be interesting to hear his side of the
    story.

To be perfectly honest, it's worth buying purely to break for the
    mudguards.

I could get about 150 quid for those in the condition they are in.

  10. He asked the DVLA if it was liable for road tax, that's all.

If, as far as the DVLA are concerned, it's a 72, you could buy it and
not alert them to their mistake and score free road tax on it.

I doubt if there's anything dodgy about it at all; just a typo at
    Swansea years ago.

Heh. It's not unknown. One bike I bought had the first owner (me)
registered as someone else entirely. I didn't notice until I was pulled
by plod one day and the PNC came up with some other name.

Could well be a typo .. one additional "curiosity" though is the
engine/frame numbers ... I seen to recall RD ones starting with
something like 1A0-xxxxxxxx or something like

Not always. I've had plenty of Rds with just the last 6 numbers on the
    V5 i.e. 330123 rather than 1A3 330123
