Paging Lozzo - carb query

  1. Loz, you haven't got the pilot jet settings for a 1982 XJ550[1], have
    you? US model, if that makes a difference.

    I'm assuming one and a half - one and three quarter turns out.

    [1] Just bought one. 12000 miles from new, superb nick, original
    exhaust, just a bit woolly low down.

    Nice little bike.

    If it's like all the other Jap bikes of the period built to US spec,
    you can count on either having to turn the needles out to 2-1/2 to 3
    turns or and/or replace the pilot jets with the next larger size.

    Even today the US spec bikes usually get the same carbs as the rest of the
    world, but the idle screw/pilot jet settings are invariably leaner than
    Euro spec, e.g., my SV650SK1 (2001) came with #15 pilot jets, the Euro
    spec was #17.5, and the idle mixture screws were at 1-1/2 turns out.
    Before I made those adjustments the engine surged horribly at small
    throttle openings and low load. Now it purrs , especially when I use
    'pure' gasoline (most gasoline here contains 10% ethanol).

  3. Thanks, Mark. I had a feeling that US spec carbs might be different.

    This runs beautifully, but is definitely woolly below 4 grand and sort
    of chunters a bit.

    I was wondering if it was the old problem of stale petrol, but it
    doesn't feel like that. My guess is the pilot jet settings. I'll have a
    play and put the carbs on the vacuum gauges.

    Of course, being a US model, it's only got a single front disc, and no
    provision fo a second caliper either. Still, it's got a steel brake hose
    on it and it stops the bike OK.

    PK, Lozzo!? have you got any pilot jets, sizes as above?

  4. First proper bike I ever rode that (Superdreams and CZs do not count).
    My memory is that it was wonderfully fast and smooth. I suspect the
    spectacles are strongly tinted with rose:) I had an XJ600 much more
    recently and I thought it was crap.

    spares when I sold them, stupid I know.

  6. Hm. Slight prob here. The pilot screw adjusters seem to be blanked off.
    Looks like an early EPA anti-tamper thing.

    Or are they somewhere other than in the side of the carb bodies???

    Fr. Jack fascinated us all by saying...
    Sometimes you can get to them by screwing a self-tapper in and wrenching
    the plug out with pliers. All depends on the bike.

  8. Hm. There are several orifices which could conceal the pilot screws. I
    ain't about to attack at random.

  9. Yeah, but I can't be arsed. It's just a niggle and I'm not keeping the
    bike anyway, so wtf.

    I'll stick the vacuum gauges on it, though.
