  1. I'm looking for the next project.

    This RD400:

    Ebay item 320221627585

    Sounds very, very interesting. Thoughts?

It's pretty much all standard with no major bits missing and there's
good chromework by the look of things. C model rear mudguards are
extremely rare because they only used that type for 18 months, and that
one looks very good. Front mudguards are still available at a price. It
still has the seat chrome strip, which is unobtainable. As long as the
silencers don't have any major damage I'd say go for it, because engine
parts and other chassis parts are cheap and available.

  4. Cheers. That's what appealed to me: a one-owner bike with, as far as I
could see, no majr bits missing, but I needed confirmation by a raging
    anal retentive nut^h^h^h expert.

IANAYTSA [1] but it looks to me like an excellent basis for a project,
especially if you can get it near that price.

I don't really understand why anyone would want one, even in concourse
    condition.

I suppose it's an age thing

That's because you never rode or owned one when they were a current
    model

Heh. I rode an immaculate original unrestored 400B about three years
ago. I was astounded at just how good it still is. Torquier than the
early pre-power valve RD350LC, very smooth, still felt bloody quick (I
think they were good for about 105-110), and just amazing fun.

The only fly in the ointment was the high wide standard bars, which
were great in traffic but which made the front end feel stupidly light
(especially under power). But bars are easily changed.

I think I'll pitch £800 or so at this one. If I win it at tht money,
I'll be happy, but I'm not going to throw more at it. I strongly
suspect some RD loony will drive the price closer to a grand.

Not a 400B, they never made one. The 400s started with the C model as
in the ebay auction you looked at. The B was the 250 and 350 model with
the rounded tank that came before.

Sorry, yes, you're right (of course). On a P plate, this one was, IIRC.

Oh well, I've been throwing money at it, and been outbid at close to
£800, so I'll leave it. We'll see what it goes for.

I spent £180 on mine today. New seat complete. Side rails. TZ sintered brake
    pads.
    You prompted my memory.

Oh, come on, it's only at 790, and there's only a couple of hours to
go. Are you going to let it get away...?

This starts to happen more when you reach a certain age. I'm off to NLM
tomorrow to pick up some Tarozzi rear sets and talk to them about their
new super, redesigned with modern components, Morini ignition pickup and
    transducer sets.

I also discovered that a 3 1/2 motor is heavier than I remembered.

I did own one, in fact I've owned several Yamaha 2 strokes and I
certainly don't want another one unless it's an RD500 and they're
pretty fucking crap compared to an RGV.

Being proud of owning an RD Yam is on a par with all that holy push
rods bullshit spouted about CG125's and I don't want one of those
    either.

My wanked out K100RS cost me less than I'd have to pay for a 'project'
RD and it took me and all my clutter to Bavaria in the middle of
winter, I'd not be wanting to do that on an RD.

I've got a soul but I also care enough about where I throw my money
not to buy something that I grew out of wanting 25 years ago.
