  1. Those variable speed limits..

When there are no limits, I.e NSL, are the cameras active and if they
are, what speed do you need to be doing to trigger them?

Oh yeah, and do they cover all three lanes?

    Cheers.

Yes and it varies. Normally seen triggered at 90.
    Yes.

Way back in the annals of UKRM I beleive JP tipped us to the fact you need
to go over the ton to trigegr when the varaible speed limit is not set.

I have successfully negotaied them at an indicated 95, so 90 seems ok.

I'm not sure that's right, actually. Only because I read the other day that
the inventors of the Gatso have developed a new camera which does have the
ability to cover lots of lanes at the same time.

The current set-up is they have 1 camera above each lane...

Both to some extent. I saw a cage get done at 85-ish on one occasion and
yet done coughmumbleeek-mph myself at other times. There doesn't seem to
be any rule of thumb for it.

There is a camera per lane installed and there is some overlap.

I think it would be more correct to say that there is the possibility
of having one camera per lane.

For a start, most of the gantry camera positions are empty, most of
the time. They do move them around. Occasionally there are two
cameras on one gantry, covering different lanes (usually the outer
ones), but normally if there are any cameras at all, there's just one
    per gantry.

All IME, YMMV. Other disclaimers may apply.

He did indeed but subsequently posted that they had been reduced to
    something like 94mph.

As has been said elsewhere, most of the boxes are empty but there is no
consistency as to which lane has a camera. I have yet to see any on the new
gantires where they have widened the motorway by the airport.

There is only one gantry per junction that has cameras fitted although one
or two have 2 cameras on that gantry. Don't assume they are in lane 4
because there are some in lane 2 or 3. They are on the same gantry both
sides so if you can see a flashgun in the gantry you are approaching (facing
the other way) you will know there is one on your side too.

Finally, the roadworks up near J18 have SPECS cameras that average speed
between 2 points although these are front facing.
