Define "not fitting in". What is he actually doing or not doing that is
causing the problem? Then advise him about what he needs to do to meet the
requirements of the job and monitor closely. If he shapes up then problem
solved - if he doesn't then sack him with a clear conscience.

    Wouldn't there be IR35 implications?

  4. You'll be issuing a warning for that then?

I'd be inclined to word it to the effect that he failed to adequately
    communicate his absence.

There's a bunch of reasons for being absent, that would pass a court -
not communicating it, in any way shape or form, unless incapacitated,
    is unreasonable.

That would be Darsy's problem, surely?

    Warnings? Plural? All verbal. FFS.

  9. Then now is the time to start making right your previous fuckups.

Write down now, every incident that you can recall the specifics of -
time and date, and the verbal warnings that you have given, time and
    date.

Reference these, along with this latest episode in a written warning.

In this written warning, also state that his overall performance is to
be monitored ongoing and reviewed weekly.

Monitor the performance and review it weekly.

Keep records of each review - timed, dated with info on what was
covered, good and bad, what advice was given for the bad.

Keep that up until he fucks up sufficiently, fucks off, or bucks his ideas up.

  10. I'm not. Not any more, after interviewing two candidates who claimed to
have a foreign language (French and Italian, respectively), and who were
    swiftly rumbled.

The first one simply threw up her hands and said: "OK, you've got me."

The second panicked when I wheeled in a native Italian and asked her to
    check.

  14. Guilty as charged.

Snowing like hell again today, and low cloud, so no skiing. Went over to
Italy (Sauze d'Oulx) yesterday. Very picturesque but more crowded than
Montgenevre. Fairly easy skiing, too. plus side: loads of mountain bars
    and restaurants.

Why not? Just being lazy, or os it closed? Presumably this is
    Montgenevre you're referring to?
Yeah, the Italians do like their piste-side refreshments. Sking fro
Bar to Retaurant to Bar can have a certain appeal on occasion;-)

(x-posted to rsre to try and breath new life over there)

  16. Yes, Montgenevre. Oh, it's open, but the visibility is really terrible
in the cloud. It's actually starting to clear as I write. So yes, it's
laziness. Blundering around in freezing fog isn't my idea of fun, and
    going hell-for-leather in a resort I really don't know isn't a good idea
    in these conditions.
Otherwise known as 'syncopation'. While, as any fule kno, is a musical
term meaning an uneven movement from bar to bar.
Number One daughter and I went off with one of the guides for a smashing
day, skiing every black in the resort and most of the reds, while The
Doctor, mindful of her pinned knee ligaments, did the same with another
guide at a somewhat slower pace.

I've done a week in Sauze and really enjoyed it. You can tramp across the
range quite a way and back inside a day.

It's largely why we do more skiing in Italy than anywhere else.
