My CD player has been playing up for some time [1] and much to my
distress, I suspect it may be beyond economic repair [2].

Rather than lash out on a new player, I suspect that something pre-loved
on ebay might be better value option. I've seen a few Marantz CD17 KI
players that would probably fit the bill, but wonder if this might be a
better option what with it being black

[1] Won't load disks properly; machanism won't clamp
[2] All components now obsolete and unavailable, local Sevenoaks have
had it back in to strip/clear/re-belt about 4 times now.

I have a Maramz CD-63 with remote control going spare, took it from my
stack a few weeks ago and purchased something newer, works perfect and
currently in my garage in Oxford (well just outside) so if you want it and
    can
    collect it's yours.

Or if not anybdoy else can have it.

To avoid any confusion, yes please and I'll collect.
I'm going to keep an aye open for a 17 KI and/or resolve the problems
with the 10, at which point I'll out it again back here

I've got a 67 MkII at the moment, but it's started beign a bit picky
with discs and probably needs replacing wiht something of a similar
level, are Marantz still any good like?

I hope you realize that all cd players sound the same,
except for a few 'high end' ones that add distortion to justify the
    price tag.

In that case I like my CD players with lots of added distortion ;-)

That's what I'm counting on; they seem to go for about £200-£250 pre-loved

Still seem to get consistently good reviews

How quaint. I gave all my CDs away last year,
the concept of physical media now seems outdated.

flac or high bit rate MP3 encoded music files and an
amp which streams and plays them over the network
(or played by the PC then fed to the amp) is my
current solution[1]. Very good it is too.

[1] Though I must admit it took me a few years to
come round to the idea. Now I've made the change the
quality is just as good, it's way more convenient and
I don't even think about the storage medium any more
(other than to make sure I back it up every once in a
    while).

You could do some measurements or blind listening tests if you were
    really interested.
Or you could continue to subsidize the snake-oil salesmen....

With the same speakers and amp , the differences between a £100 , £300 ,
£1000 and £3000 cd players will be pretty small.
I'd bet on being able to tell the difference between the first two , but
there being very little to pick once you start going further up.

    Hmmm. I'd beg to differ.

The law of diminishing returns hits very hard in the hifi world, but
even with very high-end kit, different players can give a markedly
different sound. You can't necessarily say that one player is better
than another, but they'll definitely be different.

I must admit to have been in the "it doesn't matter much about the CD
player" camp. But having just replaced my .. dunno what it was, some Richer
Sounds cheapy, with a S/H Marantz I have to admit they do sound different.
It might be my ageing ears but the cheapy sounded a lot clearer. Of course
the Marantz is a few years old and is probably past its best but it did oly
cost a fiver from the local boot sale.

You laugh at me because I am different
I laugh at you because you are all the same

Anyone with a decent soundcard can compare the output of a CD player or
    D/A converter to the original.
If two 'high-end' players sound different then at least one of them is
    broken or badly designed,
and it's easy enough to measure which is better, i.e. closer to the
    original.
But it's remarkable how differences in sound disappear when you don't know
    how much a player costs.

    Loudspeakers - a whole different ballgame. If I wasn't married I could
    justify
spending 5 grand on a pair of electrostatics.

    *cough*

Very nice too, must have been one of the supreme single-box players -
but the Law of Diminishing Returns cuts in way below this price level,
    IMHO.

The CD17 KIsig was the flavour of the year at the time and likely
still holds its own, on the basis that the ammunition for it hasn't
changed and your amp is contemporaneous. I still run the Rotel
competitor from that era, although it has been back for upgrades and
then off for a re-clock it still sounds as good as it gets to me, plus
I've spent far too much on it over the years.

There's all sorts of high-end kit about on ebay and I'm sure you could
pick up something that was quite exotic in its day for a relatively
bargain price, with a bit of careful selection. As long as the player
has indeed been loved and dusted in its time you'll be fine - look out
for signs of DJ abuse and clocking, remember that a player of this age
may have dispatched a bit in its youth and for God's sake beware of
the wide 'hi-fi feet' that so many boy racers stick on them. You need
to hear it started up from cold, listening for rattles - and check the
bonnet for signs of a brick being rested there to quell spurious
vibration. Check the transit screws for signs of drilling for
lockwiring too - you don't want one that's been raced for we all know
what that does to a CD player.

Well, by its very nature, it 'cuts in' at any level above the cheapest
    CD player on the market.

FWIW I *liked* my Cyrus CD8 rather a lot more than the 'player'[1]
below, so while, my personal opinion would be that it may well be worth
the extra. Not that *I* would buy it.
Bloody good bits of kit, both.
    LOL

[1] Cyrus DVD7+ so not exactly a fair comparison.
