I suspect you could justify, even being married. You just couldn't get
    away with it :)

Presumably you'll want to check for regular changes of snake-oil as
    well?

Eeeek, that's a dreadful concept to mention now (that it's too late, I
    mean) :-(

Is this a CD player AND an amp that's been FSCK'd recently?
If so, maybe there is more to this than just 'age'?

Sort of, yes and no. But more no than yes. By which I mean that the
amp/sub thing is electrical but the CD problem is mechanical and fairly
    long standing [1]
**** off. It's nothing to do with my age.

[1] It's not loaded right for a couple of years but has responded to
reseating the disk and/or repeated attempts. It was only when it stopped
loading altogether than I did something about it.

    Forgot to add...

Do you think I could use the guts of item 350143144610 to replace the
    amp in the sub..? :)

Fairy snuff now you put it like that.
Oooh errrr, touchy about a certain subject are we?
Except the shipping charges will bankrupt you? ;-)

    Cyrus CDwhateveryoucanafford.

Yes, they're an odd form factor but IMHO they do sound very good, plus
they do have decent after-sales service. I've got one and got my mum
another one which wanted a new laser. Cyrus sorted that out very
quickly and for a lot less than I thought, plus they were extremely
helpful on the phone. I'd like to support a business like that, even
if I don't want to purchase any new kit off them.

In principle yes, however I've been put off the Cyrus by a mate of mine
that's got them. Everso slightly too full in the bass and sharp in the
    treble.

Of course I could solve the problem by downgrading the amp and speakers...

What he said, in every respect. Although the 8s are a bit unreliable.

OTOH it is a *very* much more clinical sound that the Marantz KI's IME.

Ooh nooooo. It's got a top-note of cherry with side suggestions of
barbecued pork. Except for the lower reaches, where it smells of
    elderberries.

****'s sake, you hi-fi wankers are worse than the coffee lot.

The one Cyrus I've tried was less clinical than my 10, so as I'm hoping
for clarity and linearity then perhaps I'll give the newer Cyrus kit a spin.

Some 'better' matching should cure that, then.
