Paging Santa ...

... and Platy, as it happens.

Perhaps the finest Christmas present ever to fall into my sticky,
greasy mitts: "Into The Red", a coffeetable book by Nick Mason and Tim
Hales, featuring 22 selections from Mason's 'garage' full of exotic
    cars.

The best bit so far is the CD of DAT sound recordings of the cars,
from various tracks. I slipped it into the CD player early this
afternoon, in the middle of a discussion regarding Loz and whether we
ought to wake him up in case he was still going over to see his folks.

Anyway - I selected track 5, the V16 BRM at Donington and wound it up.
A sleeve note suggests volume setting - LOUD. 400W of Arcam
amplification was set to stun at 9.5, and off we went.

Elly suggested trimming the wick a little, as light fittings were seen
to move - but I opined that this could be the ideal solution to the
question of the snoozing Spic. " TURN IT DOWN", Elly mouthed to me as
the BRM came down under the Dunlop bridge, blurring the right speaker.

"Why?", I wondered - "it isn't that loud ..." "IT SOON WILL BE",
hollered Elly, over the rising wail. I dunno what a V16 BRM revs to,
but it's quite a few. 12k plus, iwt.

As it passed the pit wall and the mikes, both floorstanding speakers
shimmied on their spikes, then stood firm as their cones approached
full excursion - and the 'presence point' was reached and breached, as
was the point of feeling the noise - then the point of physical pain.

    **** ME, what a rush.

    I hooted, I did.
    Elly got a bit hysterical.
The staircase got a bit of abuse, then The Spic appeared, barefoot and
    dressingbegowned, wide-eyed and tousled.

"**** ME! WHAT THE **** WAS THAT?" quoth our wide-eyed hero, doing a
little leprechaun two-step, towelling flapping aroung hairy calves.

I turned it down quite a bit, feeling the pressure drop, and
    explained.

We had to do it again, of course. The adrenalin pump works a treat,
our Vagus nerves were throbbing in unison. There was some throbbing
gristle too, but only a couple of you might be interested in that.
What a pressie - what a hoot. Thanks Platy, for demoing the effect -
and thanks very much to Elly for suggesting that Santa chuck it down
the chimney. "I can hear the bells".

    HAPPY FUCKING CHRISTMAS, YOU CUNTS.

  5. He was/is an occasional contributor to 'Slice', the Scimirat OC mag; in
which he would dribble down his cardigan and reminisce about how often
the Flying Breadvan (SE5a) would overheat/break down on his way to a gig
    in the early years.

My Xmas has, by contrast, been largely silent.

Have you (or anyone else for that matter) found these at sensible money?

And have they improved them at all in the last couple of years? When I
tried them a while back I was slightly disappointed in that they were
good at removing (don't know the technical terms) steady or constant
noise like an aircraft engine but not so good at transient sounds like
    voices, noisy keyboards etc.

The effect seemed to be to lower the background hum and in doing so
accentuate the other noises, so the overall result was more distracting
rather than less. Perhaps I should have turned the music up.

  14. A colleague of mine ordered his from the US - worked out under half the
price and he still got the freebie portable CD player. Of course this
only works if you know someone stateside to take delivery and send them
    on to you.

Do they reduce noise as well as a 25p pair of foam plugs?
Do they sound as good or reduce noise as well as eighty quid's worth of
    Etymotics?
Do they work at all at dangerous noise levels?

We need a road test from Uncle Nigel.

I paid a hundred quid for mine.
Yeah, that's pretty much my experience. I still wear them in the office
if I'm doing something really intensive, like writing a critical,
    complex document.

That's what I wanted them for. I'm off to Agadir in a couple of weeks so
I can test them. Only short haul, but it'll give an idea.

I flew business class on American from New York to London a few years
ago. They passed them out for us to use on the flight. I did not want to
    give them back.
