Limescale, but they left out the best bit: if you use your filter jug for your ice cubes as well as filling your kettle you can stretch your filter changes 2-3 times what Britax recommends -- only replace the filter when you start to see carbonate specks in the bottom of your whisky glass! Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Dr Ivan D. Reid Heh. Depends on where you live. Round here the water is so hard it'll nut you if you're not careful. I can always tell when the Brita filter's on its last week, because the kettle starts to fur up. -- Wicked Uncle Nigel - Podium Placed Ducati Race Engineer WS* GHPOTHUF#24 APOSTLE#14 DLC#1 COFF#20 BOTAFOT#150 HYPO#0(KoTL) IbW#41 SBS#39 OMF#6 Enfield 500 Curry House Racer "The Basmati Rice Burner", Honda GL1000K2 (On its hols) Kawasaki ZN1300 Voyager "Oh, Oh, It's so big" Suzuki TS250 "The Africa Single" Yamaha GTS1000

Flat-bottomed kettles. Not as good as round-bottomed gurls, but better at remaining scale-free. -- Dave GS850x2 XS650 SE6a Every post contains Nutri-Ceramide-R and Pre-Biotics for your reading pleasure. Folding@Home Team UKRM http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=47957
http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,,1777516,00.html Right at the bottom. Exciting stuff about limescale in kettles.
Ours is horrible. Fucked up my exhaust valve so badly that I had to have it recut in March. Whereas the Limousin has the softest water in France and possibly Europe (the mairie warn that it is "very aggressive to pipes"). When I am there I can lay off the figs (or could it be the 2 euro red plonk effect). -- +-----------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Moto Guzzi Mille GT/Squire RS3 Gilera Nordwest | | Gilera GFR Moto Morini 2C/375 | +-----------------------------------------------------------------+
This interpretation may well be an artefact of my translation skills, but I think the water is very acidic. That can lead to pin holes in copper pipe and the classic blue stains from drips. Not to mention plumbo-solvency. Given the age of some of the properties around there and the attitude of the average gallic tenant farmer to risk there might be a lot of lead pipe still in use. -- +-----------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Moto Guzzi Mille GT/Squire RS3 Gilera Nordwest | | Gilera GFR Moto Morini 2C/375 | +-----------------------------------------------------------------+

Ding! The only good thing to be said for hard water is the longevity of the pipework, and there seems to be some evidence that soft/acidic water isn't too handy in the heart attack stakes. -- Dave GS850x2 XS650 SE6a Every post contains Nutri-Ceramide-R and Pre-Biotics for your reading pleasure.
