  3. Limescale, but they left out the best bit: if you use your filter
jug for your ice cubes as well as filling your kettle you can stretch your
filter changes 2-3 times what Britax recommends -- only replace the filter
when you start to see carbonate specks in the bottom of your whisky glass!

Heh. Depends on where you live. Round here the water is so hard it'll
nut you if you're not careful.

I can always tell when the Brita filter's on its last week, because the
    kettle starts to fur up.

  6. Flat-bottomed kettles. Not as good as round-bottomed gurls, but better
    at remaining scale-free.

Ours is horrible. Fucked up my exhaust valve so badly that I had to have
it recut in March. Whereas the Limousin has the softest water in France
and possibly Europe (the mairie warn that it is "very aggressive to
pipes"). When I am there I can lay off the figs (or could it be the 2
    euro red plonk effect).

Why's that then? How does it rot pipes?

This interpretation may well be an artefact of my translation skills,
but I think the water is very acidic. That can lead to pin holes in
copper pipe and the classic blue stains from drips. Not to mention
plumbo-solvency. Given the age of some of the properties around there
and the attitude of the average gallic tenant farmer to risk there might
be a lot of lead pipe still in use.

Indeed. It needs Coca-Cola to make it drinkable.

  16. Ding! The only good thing to be said for hard water is the longevity of
the pipework, and there seems to be some evidence that soft/acidic water
isn't too handy in the heart attack stakes.

It's shite, so water helps reduce the shiteness.
