I sold an item the other week for around £40, which I promptly wrapped up
and posted. Now the buyer's got in touch to say that he hasn't received
    anything.

Presumably I'd have to go to the PO to file a claim, but does this
actually get anywhere? Can I claim the money off the PO? I just sent it
normal first class and retained a proof of postage.

I've never had anything go missing before, so it's all new to me.

It's limited what you can claim & it's not worth it at that value. The buyer
probably has got it, but knows you can't do **** all as it's not signed for.

Post Office will say, "should've sent it insured and asked for a
signature". They'll offer to refund the postage costs.

Put it down to experience and refund the buyer, even if you suspect they
are telling porkies. Add appropriate P&P costs to your next auction to
cover insured delivery: it's only 75p extra for Recorded Delivery that
    gives £39 insurance

File a claim with the PO. You are covered up to 100 times the cost of
stamp. You should be okay with the proof of postage.

Thanks to all. I will speak to the PO about it, as it won't hurt to do
so. Next time, I'll use Recorded.

Don't see why not. It's the first item of postage I've ever had go
    missing.

I've had failings with dropped hidden and lost and the PO. Generally
the PO signed for stuff works well enough, SD is good but above 2Kg
the price is too much. An issue for me is that for international they
wash their hands as soon as it's left the international depot.

Parcel Farce is probably on that list as well. Let's see when the
delivery that is supposed to turn up in the next 13 minutes actually
    shows up...

Well, amazingly they did turn up with a few minutes to spare.

    @t21g2000yqi.googlegroups.com:

Never had a problem with them - they deliver the Laithwaites boxes.

Although, I did notice that Waitrose no longer use them. City Link turned
    up with the last delivery.

I suppose it helps that there is usually someone at home here.

    Really?

Odd that they've always managed to deliver my wine OK, but claimed to not
be able to find my address when delivering a package from Amazon this
    week.

  16. Fucking D fucking H fucking L managed to utterly smash to bits a parcel
that arrived here last week. Annoying thing was, it looked perfectly ok
externally and so the driver made good his escape.

They had two parcels to pick up on my behalf last week
the first they picked up a day late and delivered to the wrong address

the second they got the address wrong to pick up from and said that the
parcel was not ready - rebooked it and they did exactly the same,
despite me confirming the address, they then lost it at the depot

Surely if it looked "perfectly ok externally", then it was badly
    packaged?

    UKMail / Business Post.

They'll happily lie over the phone about what's happening. I had someone
on the phone telling me their driver hadn't been able to find my
building (despite the address being in foot high letters on the front)
and had given up, while the driver was at that very moment pressing the
    buzzer at the main door.

And that was on day two - on day one, despite having the delivery
scheduled for the morning, the driver "ran out of time" at 8pm and went
    back to the depot.

    Avoid.
