Great engine - sounds amazing and loads of power - aside from sounding
like a taxi at idle, you'd never know it was a diesel.

Auto is a proper auto, not a flappy paddle robotised manual.

    Very, very pretty shape.

Actually incredibly reliable, too - it's a sawn off 159 chassis.

However, they're incredibly thirsty, which defeats the point of having a
    diesel.

    Buy a V6 Petrol instead.

Specs don't appear particularly thirsty, certainly not worse than my S60
    D5.

I'd call 30-35mpg from a diesel 'thirsty', though.... what are you
    expecting?

Hmm, the info I've seen indicates low 40's, much the same as the Volvo.

Official and real world figures on those are very different.

When I was looking at 156s, the 2.0TSpark petrol was roughly the same
price to fuel as the 2.4JTD.

Mid 30's are not any good at all for a diesel. Time to think again.

    159 with the 150bhp 1.9JTDm lump.

Bit bigger than I want really. The Brera appeals as it's essentially a
3 door hatchback with a 5 cyl (I think) lump plus auto. The main thing
I like about the Volvo is the engine and autobox, but the size and
appalling turning circle are a real bind.

Which at least has the correct number of cylinders and fuel type :)

Personally I'm not a great fan of the shape, but each to their own.

    Pretty bomb proof AFAIK

I was about to recommend a GT, but it has the turning circle of a barge.

My brother has a GT. Had loads of turbo trouble when he first got it.

    Get a V6 then :)

Same engine AFAIK in the GT and others. SteveH will know better, though.

No, the GT has the Alfa 'Busso' V6.

The 159 and Brera have the GM derived V6.

(It's a GM block with Alfa 'twin phaser' heads)

The new V6 isn't a bad engine, but it's nowhere near as charismatic as
    the Busso.

I meant the diesel, actually, but wasn't exactly clear.

    Ahhh.

The GT never got the 5-pot option, as it's very closely related to the
    147.

The 5-pot engine is a development of the engine used in the 156.

Obviously, the 4-pot diesels are used across the whole range.

  17. I liked the one I had as a hire car at the WSBK round at Imola last
year, I did manage to break it though after some spirited driving
through the twisty hilly bits between San Marino and Bologna.
