Paging SteveH & the SatNav crue

I bought a cheap SatNav from Tchibo last year, on Steve's
recommendation. It was well under 100 quid, and has done the job
pretty well on the (suprisingly few) occasions I've used it.

But now it's moaning that the maps are more than 12 months out of
date. A bit of googling hasn't got me very far - it's a Medion GoPal
device, but it's hard work finding out what version of anything it's
running, or how to get an update. The medion shop
(www.medionshop.co.uk/) mostly just gives java errors when I try to
    navigate to the relevant area.

    Any ideas?

I believe this is just a Windows CE device, which I think means I
could install any software I want on it, yes? The standard software
has all sorts of shit I don't want (picture and video viewer, FFS), so
would one option be to wipe it and install TomTom or similar on it?

If it's like the Medion one of the lads at work has, he did just that &
    intalled Tomtom on it.

    That site really is shit:

" Application error occurred during request processing.
    Details: java.lang.NullPointerException: null
    Exception id: [00306E49B9D3004B0000046800002D80000467321BA40A77]"

Anyway, navigating from the main menu leads me to a map update for
GoPal V2.x (dunno what version I have, but the other available one,
V4.x,b only seems to cover the US). And it's £79.99. Is that really
    what a map upgrade costs?

Seems to be. Garmin's asking the same for their maps.

Indeed. I paid for an update for my 2610 a while back. I've made an
executive decision not to give them any more money until I change to a more
sophisticated device. The website Bear mentions above has a way to unlock
the data. Worked a treat on CN 09

Have you seen what BMW, Porsche et all charge for a DVD update for the
OEM satnav systems! One of my tick points for the Ragtop was no built
    in satnav.

Hmm. I just updated the maps on the 2820 to the latest ones for 60
quid directly from Garmin and they offered the US maps for a similar
amount of dosh... Probably depends on the device.

That's the route I've taken, the Navigo is a CE based device I
believe. So it should work for others.
