A mate of mine has a problem with his GTV: the gearchange (such as it
was, cable operated POS) went to **** in that he coudn't get reverse on
demand. He's found the problem, which is that the moulded nylon socket
at the base of the gearstick has split.

The problem is that he cannot get the split socket out of the car.

Any FOAK got a wise answer for this one?

Following on from Wessie's useful suggestion ..

    1) Nuke it from space
    2) AG
    3) Molotov

  5. Qbond will put anything made of abs plastic back together. I've used it on the
belt tensioner on my Subaru with no problems at all.

No. I't snot an issue that *I've* ever heard of. SteveH or one of the
    others may have.

I haven't had a chance to get my hands on it yet, so I'm working
second-hand, as it were: he can see three bolts/studs, but can't get at
the nut on the bottom. Because of this, the heads just rotate without
loosening and he can't see any way to get at the nuts.

I can see it'll end up with the car on its side, exhaust off, heat
shields off and drilling through the flaming floor.

Qbond, eh? I'll have a look at that; the problem is this socket is the
self-lubricating high-tensile nylon stuff that as far as I know isn't
glueable with anything. Araldite, for example, goes hard all right,
but at the first sign of stress just cracks away from the nylon in one
    lump.

    It's an Alfa.

Just spray some water on it and the floor will rust through...

Pretty sure that's not the approved way.

IIRC there is a sort of collar around the gearstick in the floor that
can be removed. Does that help? I could go and look at SWMBO's if I can
    get some time today.

It's the new GTV, not the old one.

It's all clear now, I managed to find a download of the manual for the
beast. I can see this turning into another one of those little jobs,
you know. Pages 737 to 740 of 788 give the answers:

    Disconnect battery
Remove ducting between air filter and inlet manifold
Disconnect gearchange cables at gearbox end
Remove several shedloads of highly pingfuckitty interior trim around
    dashboard and tunnel
Remove tunnel unit CAREFULLY (see assembly 70 (WTF?))
    Disconnect wiring
    Hike car into air
Remove complete exhaust system (this is not without some small caveats,
    like sensor wiring and corrosion)
    Remove heat shields
Whip trolley jack under gearlever/handbrake assembly
Remove all eight bolts, and their associated nuts and washers retaining
    said assembly
CAREFULLY drop out the gearlever/handbrake assembly, complete with
    gearchange cables etc etc
Drag it all out from under the car ... then start to dismantle that
assembly to get at the worn/split nylon socket
Fit new socket assembly at cost of 150 quid plus the vat

Rebuild car, interior and exterior, underneath and in engine
compartment. Shouldn't take more than a couple of days if the weather
    stays fine.

Alternatively, persuade a Jubilee clip around the thing and tack it
into place so it /cannot/ move. Should take twenty minutes.

I suppose there's always the petrol and match solution, too.

Have I said recently that working on cars is potentially deeply unpleasant.

There is a lot to be said for the Aerial Atom concept.

Talking of which, here is an engine to wank over
