I'm not really sure I agree, to be honest.

If a fine is to have any meaning then surely it must cause equal "pain"
    to different offenders?

A direct relation to disposable income does then seem appropriate.

  3. Indeed. A guy worth 20 plus million isn't going to give a **** about a
sixty quid FPN, or even a couple of grand court assesed fines.

    I couldn't give a monkeys about a 60 quid fine either. The worst I've
had is a 1200 quid fine and that was a pittance compared with the legal
bill. These things just get filed under sundry expenses along with
    petrol and tyres.

Points and jail time, otoh, those I can really live without.

Isn't one of the prime purposes of accumulating wealth to distance yourself
from the petty restrictions imposed by govmints on the proles?

  9. That might be one of *your* prime reasons.

Of course, in this case, being rich wouldn't have distanced the chap
    from the petty restriction.

Not speeding would have done a better job of that.

I suspect it's more to buy yourself the illusion that you're not one
    of them.

  11. Initially I thought he was a bit of a **** for doing 85mph through a
village, and ****'im he can afford it. But wait a minute, what village
has a 50mph limit? Probably one with a dual through it and likely
barriers on both sides - like many of those villages the old A1 carved
through years ago - if that's the case I'm still of the opinion he's a
**** for not doing the ton through it.

It is precisely to be able to drive as far and as fast as you wish without
    undue worry, as it happens.

Or perhaps you are just happy to sit up and beg like a good dog and take the
    biscuits you are given.

Like some here I ignore the posted limits now and adopt a speed that seems
appropriate for the road and conditions. So I might be doing 15mph in a 30
limit. I might OTOH be doing 90.....

    Your slip is showing.

I don't think I'm alone in realising a bit o' brass insulates one somewhat
form the sharper edges of Nanny State. Don't think you are immune either.

Hold on, are you deluding yourself that a bit of applied dosh and forward
thinking cannot insulate yourself from some of lifes little challenges? If
so you don't know what the **** you are talking about. Particularly when it
comes to <cough> road use issues.

That has nothing to do with fines and everything to do with compensation
penalties. Completely irrelevant to the matter at hand.

And fines already are income-related. The difference is that there's an
upper limit. As, indeed, there is in the example you've referred to -
£5,000 per offence. So beyond irrelevant and into outright babbling.

I dunno, I think means tested fines are perfectly reasonable. I can't
    articulate why, I just do.

Silly fucker shouldn't have doubled the speed limit through a village
    really.

  20. Agreed. Otherwise it's just a rich man's charter: "I don't GAF, because
I can afford to pay the fines."
