So do I, but within reasonable limits. It seems to be 5k in the UK, which
    seems resonable don't you think.
Or rather he shouldn't have got caught doing so!

I realise you are more than a little careful in this respect, needing to
    drive with the job etc.

There's several round here which are completely NSL. Even the one-car-
wide bits and the blind bends.

    SteveH'll remember Latimer, Bucks.

  5. Between Chesham and Loudwater, via Chenies?

If so, I know the roads you mean, I used to live in Chesham.

It's worth bearing in mind the Swiss national speed limit is 50mph.

Not when you've got the kind of money he has. Do you really think
    he'd miss 5 grand?

Well I'd be pissed off it it were applied to me, but really, at 137kph
    in a 50kph limit I can't blame them.

And reading back through the various reports there's more to this than
meets the eye, as he falsely claimed to the court that he was an
African Diplomat entitled to immunity and that his diplomatic plates
had fallen off the car. He also has a string of offences, which must
each have been more than +20kph to be counted.

The original court calculated the fine at 90,000 francs, but the
kantonal prosecutor appealed it, demanding that it should be raised to
150,000. When it got to the higher court they actually doubled this
amount to get to 300,000 , which was set at 130 * his daily income.

But he only has to pay half of it - the rest is suspended for two
years. In fact, I think he got off quite lightly, as they could have
banged him up for up to three years .

Yep, I read that, made the law having no top level seem sensible
I parsed that as "could have banged him for up to three years"

Good lord was he a FNC? No wonder those lovely Swiss leant heavily on him.

I knew there was a lot more to it, my point was just that that fines should
    be set within (reasonable) bounds.

That isn't really the point though is it.

Surely that's exactly the point. What would be the point of a fine that has
    no effect?

    <sigh>
Most fines outside financial crime have very little *real* effect.

I seem to be arguing against draconian penalties <shakes head>

The driver, while a **** it seems, didn't actually do anything to anyone.

Isn't that the point though. It isn't a draconian penalty to him. A penalty
that has no effect isn't a penalty at all. You might as well reduce all
penalties to a fiver and have done with it. If you are going to use them as
a penalty at least make them work.

Whether he did anything worthy of a fine is a different issue!

Our criminal justice system mostly imposes penalties that have no effect.
    Why break a winning streak.

Of course it is. The fine is a punishment. If the punishment has no
effect, then it's not an appropriate punishment.
