OK I'm in Mountain View CA for work, no car but I have a bicycle...
I'd like to rent something (with 2 wheels and a combustion engine) for
next Saturday the 9th: do you have any recommendations for an
itinerary? I'd like to leave around 10am and be back at 5pm more or
    less.

Hiring: I found these guys a couple of miles from my accommodation:
    http://www.californiamotorcycleadventures.com/
I'm slightly concerned because as far as I can understand they don't
offer collision damage waiver and I'm afraid I'm going to scratch one
of their shiny HD... But the idea of a HD once in my life is tempting.
Do you know of other rental places nearby (let's say 5 miles around
Mountain View) where I can hire a bike with CDW? Can offer a beer at
Tied house downtown for good suggestions :).

    Thanks!

Http://www.justharleys.co.uk/ seems to be the closest Harley dealer to
Whitley Bay. You could do worse than giving them a call.

Depending on how much time you've got, you could head up the coast to
Bamburgh and then on to Lindisfarne

I think my confusion stemmed from the fact that the OP signed off as
"SD", so I initially thought (despite the reference to a bicycle) that
    it was Salad Dodger.

Also, despite the location, some part of my brain still balks at the
idea of anyone capable of - even poorly - operating something as
"modern" as Usenet, also being dumb enough to want to even temporarily
    ride a Harley.
no, not this time. I've been in France - my "clever gland" needs to
    reboot.

They don't rent bikes... They gave me a contact and I've just sent a
request. But they are really helpful guys and the shop is great. Your
    beer is on hold ;-)
