I did a 'Motorcycle Maintenance' night school course many, many years
ago. It was held in a school metalwork room and gave use of the
machinery under supervision. Most of the people there were actually
tuning racers. Would you believe I upped the CR on a two stroke by
draw-filing the head? It worked too - for a while. Not to be compared
with my CR ratio experiment on the 29 Raleigh [1]. A piece sawn off
another old piston and bolted to the flat top Panther job I had modified
    to fit.
This actually proved the principles[1] and I later had a proper bodge
done by an alloy welder as a foreigner at Swan Brand in Brum [2].

[1] Not as alternative thinking as the boke who achieved this by
stretching some vintage single motor's con-rod allegedly.
[2] That it went much better as long as it was on dope, but it was
fucking impossible for me to bump start with the very 'slow' cam timing
it had. Even though I had the cams re-profiled by Bruno Engineering.
    [3] Spot the motorcycle connection.

Well, I did Metalwork in school. I *loved* the forge, heating up bits of
iron and beating them into different shapes. Hmm...

    On 14 Dec 2006 04:00:59 -0800, TOG@toil,
This would be the way to go but unless your local college do short
'starter' courses then you'll be starting next autumn.
That's the best place to start from because you'll not be starting
with an "I already know that" attitude.
You'll get in a right mess with welding until you understand something
about what it is you're trying to weld so do the welding after you've
done a bit of machining. Machining will teach you about materials and
their properties very quickly and you can progress from there.
I'm sure Nigel will tell you where to get dinky little cnc mills from.
His is small enough to be hidden away in the house.
    Only if you're stupid...
Get an offer of an apprenticeship.

  11. Unfortunately, that means ditching the daytime job.

It's a **** isn't it? I had to jack in my paper round when I started
    my apprenticeship.

Most people who went through an apprenticeship could have earned
considerably more in a different job with no qualifications at all.
    Short term.

Someone at my old skool used their metalwork class time to forge a
master key to the whole new block.
