A mate's just bought a Panasonic Lumix TZ3. I had a brief meddle with it and
it seems absolutely dirt cheap to me - 10x optical zoom (does equivalent of
28-280mm) with IS and it seems to be sold at around £150. I'd struggle to
get a decent 300mm telephoto for my old Nikon SLR for that money, and I'd
have to carry around a selection of lenses too. Granted it doesn't have
aperture priority modes and the like.

Is it as good as it looks or am I just hugely behind in what's available in
the world of fairly cheap digicams? Something with aperture priority and
shutter priority modes would be nice, but then again so would not lugging a
big SLR around for snaps, waiting for developing etc, and faffing around
with phone cams for ebay and the likes. The way I see it, with something
like that there's the chance that I'll actually have it on me when I see
interesting wildlife and the likes, whereas I'm not likely to lug a 300mm
lense and SLR around with me.

  2. You've hit the nail on the head. It's more important to have *some* sort
of camera and get an image than to have no camera with you at all. If
the Lumi is pocketable and reasonably spec'd then go for it.
The number of good pics I've taken is far outweighed by the ones I
missed because I didn't have a cam in my pocket.

In that fine tradition of UKRM of suggesting what you have yourself

I know someone with one of those (or something very similar). It's nice and
you gain more control over what's going on *but* it's heading towards SLR
    size again.

    It is indeed.
However I failed to find anything ( at a reasonable price ) that would
    give me full control (1).

  14. I wouldn't waste my money. From what I've seen of that, and feedback
from previous course participants it's not all that. You could do just
as well, for nearly free, by joining a photo club or reading and
digesting many of the online photo guides available.
More importantly, you could do a lot of what's on the course just by
getting out there and taking pics - it's digital, it's effectively free,
learn quickly by your mistakes. Go for it.
