<g> We've bought a lot of Calvados home from France over the years.
The nicest was one we bought in Val Thorens, and the worst one we
bought from a Normandy distillery. Time for another round of trials I
    feel.

Is there a *nice* Calvados? I remain to be convinced.

Yep - just like any spirit, really.

If you're TOG-touring we might try and find some.

    Not that that will help

  11. Well, yeah, I'd class it like living in rural Kent/Sussex with better food
    and plonk.

They don't seem to need a great depth in flowing water at least and I
quite often see them in the shallows when fishing in lakes. There might
even be some native crayfish if no signal jobbies (basically bigger and
gaudier) have 'found' your pond. Let's just say that when looking round
before purchase I saw one in our 'river', and remarked on it to Max (the
previous French owner), he tapped his nose and said, "Ne dites rien sur
les ecrivisse" (OK Des not exactly that but I got the message).

A bit of basic angling with a worm, bent pin, and string might be
    revealing.
    Fine.

    And this is bad how?
    Oh yes, utterly forgotten, sorry.

    In short bloody good.

Tiny pub, fine, *fine* beer. I opted for the Brick Kiln whatever it was.
A rich, golden ale with great length and a perfect touch of bitterness.

I had the 24 hour ragu of Muntjac, the Rabbit in mustard, lemon and
rosemary and the (black) treacle tart.

The Ragu was meltingly soft, perhaps a *tad* sweet. The pasta was
perfect. The rabbit was hard work (in the sense that most rabbits are)
but was utterly superb. The treacle tart was not what I was expecting,
but was jolly fine anyway. I had a lump of SWMBO's pork [1] and it was
superb as well. Perhaps a tad salty on the crackling, but the actual
pork itself was great. My mixed salad was great as well.

SWMBO had the pea and mint soup then the slow roast pork belly followed
by the most lovely blackberry and apple crumble, and superb custard.

The soup was wonderfully fresh, super green and minty. The basil oil
    dirzzled was massively intense.
The pork was as described above, with lovely celeriac (IIRC) puree and
roasted veg. The crumble was perfectly sweetened, not masking the
natural tartness of the fruit, the cruble itself was nice and crunchy.
The custard was dotted with vanilla seeds, and there was no doubt from
the flavour that they weren't cheap and nasty ones :)

Coffee was a bit of a let down, but the fudge petits fours were a bit
disconcerting. It was as if someone had nicked my (dead) grandmother's
recipe, which I have never had elsewhere. Something of a crashing of
    memory came in there.

The wine was costly. The house red was hugely fruity, but perfectly
acceptable. Possibly not what I would have chosen on unlimited budget,
but the prices got quite silly quite fast.

Bill all in, for two £96ish.

Personally I thought it was good value, but YMMV.

    [1] Insert euphamism here....

south of there, but no-one's heard of St Dizant du Gua so it's a
convenient landmark. Saintes is lovely and i intend to spend some time
in the crypt, probably singing. and have picnics at the roman
amphitheatre, watching for ghosts in the sunlight.

i haven't quite moved yet, there is a snaglet with the debased pound
which has left me with c. 30,000 euros less than when i signed the
compromis. lend us a few quid, mister?

You ask that as if you think it's ever likely to improve. The Euro's
just about the strongest currency around and the only thing making the
pound look strong is the US dollar.
