Stupid quesion - but which key blank can you use that'll be available
off the shelf at Timpsons, etc? (I only have 1 key, and after losing one
of my 2 BMW keys last week, reckon it's time to have some spares cut)

I don't know whether it's the same as getting car keys cut but I used a
local key chappie (in Malvern) when I lost one of my Peugeot keys. My key
contains a transponder thingy or so I'm told and he was able to copy the
whole thing in minutes. It wasn't as cheap as a straightforward key but
still a whole lot cheaper than the dealers.

Doesn't surprise me. I had a key cut by a locksmith, but it didn't work.

Also need to get myself a new folding type BMW key, as the spare I have
    isn't of the folding variety.

Heh. Both my bikes are way too old to have transponder keys.

I just need a source for a blank key - as several places I've asked
    haven't been able to help.

I used an ordinary type - the folder was a PITA and stayed at home.

I tried several places to get a key cut for the R80RS, but none of them
worked. Apparently there's an extra "bit" that the keycutters don't do.

I had to email a scanned copy of my log book to Rainbow BMW (they do
keycutting onsite) and the key they sent worked perfectly. I'd tried 4
different keys from various cutters before and all they'd work in was the
    fuel cap ISTR.

That may explain why only 1 of the 2 spares I have actually works, then.

I have no idea what happened to the other key - I only popped out to
shuffle bikes around in the garage, and can't find it now.

My own fault for not putting it on a keyring.

I kind of realised that. It's just that an car locksmith may have access to
more blanks than a standard one.
