    Why?

It looks like just another Alpine pass, but with all the fun non-hairpin
    bits taken out.

  2. Stunning - don't miss it

campsites and some spectacular seafood. Also, have a
Pistoia is an undiscovered gem. I saw Bob Dylan there in the square in
    2006, an amazing evening

Go over the Appenines on the way, take the mountain road from Massa
through Vagli Sotto to Poggio and the Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and
them to Lucca. An absoloute gem.
My own favorite (Kathryn liked it a lot) is Ferrara which has
Beautiful, and a short hop to the Nurburgring.

Well then to get as far as Italy I'd suggest the route I drove last year and
the Alpsrun folk covered some of the same. It uses no toll roads until you
    reach Milan.
    Calais>Belgium>Luxembourg>Saarbrucken>Basel>Grimsel pass>Simplon
    pass>Stresa>Parma

Few finer trips to do in Europe IMHO

From there to Amalfi I can't comment But I see MJ's on the case

this might help http://bit.ly/gzP3bN [google maps link]

It looked okay in Firefox but when that link is clicked it seems to spread
the waypoints onto 2 pages in the LH frame so the bit after Aosta is on p2.
Obviously, you won't go from Garda directly to Aosta but I can't help with
anything south of Verona apart from the Sorrento/Amalfi area, which I guess
    you know by now.

I've put Steinsoultz down as a waypoint which is near Ace's. Didn't want to
put an accurate waypoint in a public link.

You can get around the 2 pages thing to some extent by deleting all the
pushpin items (which really just duplicate the blue line bits). Stupid
    limitation, really.

I wanted the pushpins/waypoints as most are marking locations mentioned in
my 1st reply to the OP.

Another annoying thing was that it would not let me create a route over the
Timmelsjoch now, as it knows the road is closed due to snow. It should pop
up a warning but let the user over-ride the feature.

Cheers Wessie; I think with all the info that's come in I might just
chuck it all at Horse to give him something to do over half term.

And that way if he doesn't enjoy it, it's his fault ;-)

Thought about it, decided against. Where I'm staying it 2 miles from the
beach as the crow flies, but 14 miles of hairpins by road. That'll keep
    me in harpin practice

Looks good and not dissimilar to Wessie's (though I need to look in
detail, so far they are both blue lines going top left to bottom right)

If you want to take an evening ferry, you're welcome to stop off in
Belgium to get an early start on this side of the water.

Oh, cheers. That might help a lot. Better than my normal approach of
late ferry then drive throug the night which isn't fun for anyone

oh, and if he is into windsurfing or the like, there's plenty of that sort
of thing at the northern end of Lake Garda. The winds in the late afternoon
as everything cools down mean they get up to serious speeds. Torbole seemed
to be full of pretty, sporty types. Male & female to suit all tastes.

I spent quite a few hours in a lake shore bar/restaurant with my 16 yo lad,
both enjoying a few beers whilst ogling the totty. I'm assuming as you've
designated Horse navigator that he is of an age where such things cross his
    mind from time to time.
http://www.hotellagodigarda.it/it/gallery.asp was our preferred spot as you
get the lycra clad sporty types walking by and motorcyclists stripping off
    across the road.

Looks lurvely; I don't want to wait now. I want to go!

Horse will be almost 14 when we go, so he's an experienced totty watcher
