Paging the Garmin and Nokia boffins

My most recent purchase has been a Nokia E75 mobile handset that I
would like to use while driving/riding. It has Bluetooth 2.0 capability
but won't work properly with my Garmin Zumo 550, which is also
Bluetooth 2.0. My old Sony Ericcson K800i did and still does, but I
can't suss what is going wrong with this new phone.

I can connect via Bluetoothto the satnav ok, and that informs me it's
ready to make and receive calls, but when I do answer a call the voice
doesn't come through, all I get is some skawking through my headset no
matter whether it's my Nokia BH208 or the Scala Rider FM I have on my
lid. This has never happened with the old K800i. The E75 works fine as
a handset when not connected to the satnav.

I've had to resort to using my old phone whenever I am driving or
riding, which pretty much defeats the object of having the new phone
    altogether.

Anyone got any ideas what's wrong?

You're attempting to use the bluetooth on a Nokia Symbian S60 phone.

I've pretty much given up using my E71to do bluetoothy things abd like
yourself use an old phone that works properly on the move.

Nokia's Bluetooth implementation. It has always been very flaky.

If I want to download my phonebook to the car, I have to do it from an
SE phone (K800i), as Nokia don't allow you do do it en mass - you have
    to do each contact individually.

    Thanks.

If that's the case then the E75 will be on ebay very soon and a Sony
Ericcson Xperia X1 will be bought instead. I'm pretty pissed off with
this phone not being anywhere near as useable as I expected it to be.

My E71 is 75% a delight and 25% a pain in the arse.

It's becomes slightly less of a pain in the arse since I discovered that
whilst it didn't do WEP or WPA at all well, it's fine with WPA2.

However, mine loses connection readily during calls which I suspect is
down to the 3 software doing all it can to cling on to 3G reception
rather than being willing to settle for 2G then dropping the call when
it moves from one to the other. It's noticeable that in the menus I have
a choice of 3G or 3G+2G; no option to select only 2G.

But the Bluetooth is abysmal. Connecting to my PC I get regular drop
outs, connecting to the Garmin or my headset it disconnects and
reconnects about once every 2-3 seconds and with the car kit it goes
    into a right huff.

The fact that I pay for a second contract for a second phone in the cage
doesn't really sing the praises of the Nokia, does it?

I didn't have a problem moving all the contact details from my old
Nokia to my latest one (E51) when I had it forced upon me. I can't
remember how I did it but it was pretty simple once I'd actually had a
    look at the manual.

I've got an E51 and though I don't really rate it overall the
bluetooth works fine. This might be because I've got a Nokia handsfree
set fitted in the van but without trying to pair it to someone elses
    set I'll never know.

Thats not my experience using my Zumo 550 and my E71. No problem with
auto pairing both at all and all the contacts/call history comes through
    fine.

It's odd how different people have different perceptions. I'm on
contract with 3 - have been for about 5 years now - and have never had a
    problem with them.

Coverage seems good - other half is on Vodaphone and it's not often she
    has a signal when I don't.

I'm using an N95 8GB that seems to work fine - connects to the TomTom in
the car for making calls and traffic updates, transfer the entire phone
book to the Tomtom in one go - not one entry at a time like SteveH claims
    you have to do.

I think the catch is that some bluetooth relationships (for want of a
better word) work and some don't, and because typically you might not
buy both items from the same place it's difficult to resolve where the
    problem lies.

S60 phones seem to struggle with Parrott car kits (who I nelieve are the
major OEM supplier to vehicle manufacturers). It would be easy to point
the finger at Parrott, but as all of my non-S60 phones from the last 5
years work seemlessly and faultlessly with the car kit and other
bluetooth accessories, but my two S60 phones don't work with most of
them sort of points the finger of suspicion at the S60 kit.

Unfortunately the problems aren't uniform across devices, some work
well, some work oddly, some work intermittently and some son't work at all

Maybe newer Nokias have changed things - but I have a 6230i as it's a
solid 'business' phone, and you can't transfer the phonebook to the car
in one go - coming to think of it, when I wanted to transfer the whole
phonebook to another phone it wouldn't do it, either.

On the other hand, SE phones have supported bulk transfer of contacts
ever since they launched their first bluetooth handset.

even the old phones had a copy to sim, put sim in new phone, copy to
    phone.

That's a really crap way of doing it, though - as it doesn't copy all
fields or duplicates entries for each field.

Fortunately, I can use iSync to keep both phones in sync. with each
    other.

My ShiteOldSony K750i will do that, and it'll send all contacts via
bluetooth if I want it to.
