Does anyone have a phono pre-amp that is no longer required kicking around anywhere ? Beer tokens available.
I bought a reasonable quality JVC amp with a phono input and a blown output transistor for £5 from a second-hand shop. Works fine for plugging the record deck into my soundcard to rip vinyl to MP3.
Mmmm.... Don't want to buy another amp, as I have a pioneer vsx-909 home cinema amp, with everything in the house wired through it. Its all neatly (yeah right) wired into a stack, the thought of trying to break the stack down and adding another amp scares me more than a trip to see the accountant.
My PC is in the study, the HiFi gear is all in the living room. Just moving the record deck, when I wanted to rip vinyl, was much easier than moving both the deck and the amp, which already has a phono input but is also the centre of the cable spiders web. Hence the temporary (pre)amp located with the PC. Sounds like you're looking to solve a different problem but don't forget that a old amp just used for it's pre-amp stage doesn't need any access, since the controls (once the source is set) have no effect, and there's very little cooling requirement as the output stage is unused. It may not be technically elegent but you could quite happily just tuck it in corner or down the back. Granted a purpose-built unit would be smaller but the cheap ones are crap and the good ones are expensive.
Not if your idea of enjoying music is listening to a boom box. If you're after even moderate sound quality it is likely to be. In other words, don't that kind of pikey shit if you don't want to ruin your ears.

Ahh... everythings in one small room for me, I could probably find space for a smaller pre-amp, but not for another hifi sized component. I spotted Item number: 290074808873 CREEK OBH-9 PHONO PRE AMP but I guess this can only be used with MC Cartridges. I've got a Technics SL1210MKII fitted with a Stanton 500 Cartridge, but for the life of me I can't seem to remember or google whether its Moving Coil or Moving Magnet ! Any ideas ?
Forgetting this thread in particular but generalising, I sometimes wonder if you couldn't just change the subject and certain key words all the way through the thread and end up with the same people posting the same basic content time after time after time. Try it next time there's a thread slagging off Microsoft and you'll see what I mean.
Dunno, but I have an Technics SL-BD22D which I connect to a fairly budget Sony stack (or my VAIO) via a 'Project Phono Box'. My ears have clearly then been "ruined". Seems it works with both but has been discontinued (no doubt a MkIi version is available): http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/226 -- +-------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Gilera Nordwest Yamaha WR250Z | | Gilera GFR Moto Morini 2C/375 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+
A quick blast to Maplin in Oxford this morning saw me return with a £22 SP-24A Stereo Phono Preamplifier. It sounds marvellous to me, coupled to a Pioneer home cinema amp and B&W speakers.
Try British cars. I recently chickened out of riding the bike in the snow and rather than rent or buy another car I grabbed my dear old dads Rover 114 Gta. Whilst it's been nice not having to worry about scraping my shiney motorbike down the road. I have felt strangely vulnerable in the thing. My brain has just about imploded trying to figure out how it was allowed to be designed and manufactured. Never mind who the hell bought it when it was new.
