"wan ba dan" = "turtle's egg". For some reason this is not a nice thing to
call anyone. It seems to be roughly equivalent to "arsehole", "bastard",
"wanker" etc. In other words, a general purpose insult, suitable for all
    occasions.

Ta muchly. The sprog has been watching too much chop-socky on the TV of
late, and has developed a morbid curiousity about Cantonese insults.

OT from your OT, but we found this traditional chippie in Taipei run by a
couple of lads from Falkirk on the last trip.

If I ever find myself in the position of just 'passing through' HK, as
opposed to living there for months at a time, I hope I find something
more imaginative to do than visit a scottish chippy!

The latter's always worked for me.
It's great for pretending that you think it means hello.
Especially to fit little Chinese girls.

She was v. impressive going under the anaesthetic in the Dental Hospital
    this morning:

Laura: "...feels like I'm drunk.... Dooooood... Wan ba dan. <something
    else in a similar vein>"
    Nurse: "Huh?"
    Moi: "She's swearing. In Cantonese."
    Nurse: <boggle>

    Heh.

So you don't know what it means then? Or you think you do, but it's not
actually what you think it means.
