Paging the K100-isti

    There's a cheapish 1984 K100 advertised locally, so after weeks of "I
shouldn't, but I fancy bricks, but I can use the money, but.....", I
arranged a viewing for tomorrow. I drove by today and the beemer is actually
a square-headlight model missing its fairing, so either LT or RS, I couldn't
tell. The idea is to buy it as a roadworthy bike but not mind if it ends up
spending months partially disassembled. I did search the internets, but I'd
like the FOAK's opinion (also stuff like parts availability, what to look
for and wether it's mechanically easy to sort). The missing fairing
increased my indecisiveness as I doubt it'll be easy/cheap to replace.

Oh yeah, the seller claims that the fuel lines are porous and therefore
leaking; it doesn't sound outlandish but I'm curious why he can't replace a
five quid item which may prevent a sale. I probably can't ride it properly
like that either as he said it *leaks*. Could it be something else?

Arse...*RT* or RS. So much for proof-reading.

    I wouldn't think it is.
I would stay away from the bike. If you've got the time, you can get a
very reasonable K100RT for not very much money.

As Timo says, I'd avoid. There are plenty of decent Ks out there.
Actually, I've got a few bookmarked on eBay because Number One Son
ends his 33bhp purdah soon and he's not having my Ducati: what he
needs is something that won't dissolve in winter and will shrug off
    neglect.

Also, the naked K100s just aren't that nice to ride. A K75 is much
    better.

I wouldn't go near it unless it was to break it for spares.

Quite a few on here have either got or had K100s and they're decent
enough bikes if they're maintained properly. If someone can't even be
arsed to change a fuel line he probably has the same attitude towards
basic servicing. I wouldn't believe the porous fuel line crap either
unless I'd seen fuel pouring out of an apparently undamaged line.

    Money pit
    Walk away

Everything everybody else has said is bang on the money
Replacing BMW plastic even secondhand is expensive
K's leaking fuel is usually something a lot worse than porous fuel
    line
What Bonwick says is exactly what was going through my head

Easy. The LT is a big boxy van with a VW motor in it. Innit.

Possibly bad form, but it's not an answer, it's an update.

So I read your comments, which were rather clear and then completely forgot
them once I went to see the bike. Turns out it's an RT and the missing
fairing jobby was pretty much all there but taken apart by the owner who
couldn't be arsed to work on the bike any more. All in all the bike looked
rather solid although neglected as it had been stood for over a year. I
decided to buy it without being able to check anything vital, other than
that the engine runs happily for the 15 seconds I had before fuel splashed
all over the place. I tried to reason by saying to myself that I should be
able to get what I paid for simply by breaking it. Either way, I'm now the
happy owner of a beemer that might run properly again at some point, so wish
    me luck.

Edit: I just saw WUN's post regarding an RT, judging by your comments I
should bprobably not show pics of "mine"... Still, not as easy to find one
around here and I have pleny of time left to regret what I did. It's
supposed to be a project anyway.
