I read ukrm from several different places, and often lose track of what
    I've read and what I haven't.

If I ran something like leafnode, is there any ability to mark the
messages as read on the server, or do I need to go down something like
    the newsreader onna usb-stick path?

Probably, depending on how accurately you want to record what you've
read and what you haven't. I usually just pick a time that I think I've
read up till, then mark as read anything earlier.

I did toy with the idea of automagically syncing my .newsrc between work
and home, or setting up a script to email it to myself and unpack it,
but a combination of CBA-ness and lack of tuits meant that it never got
    done.

  3. Leafnode is a server - not a reader. To read you would need access to
your news server from wherever you are.. And each news server uses
different reference numbers to the news articles in its spool so just
transporting your newsrc file between servers isn't going to work
    either.
    I'd go for that one.

I use Agent on my machines at home and work. When I close Agent, it
uses the 'export newsrc file' option to write out the newsrc.txt,
which I import to Agent on the other machine.

I used to move the newsrc file by emailing it to myself at the other
location. However, I'm now using Microsoft Live Mesh which gives me
shared synchronised disk space in 'the cloud', which works
    brilliantly.

So, when I close Agent at home it writes newsrc.txt to my 'share' area
on Mesh, then when I fire up Agent at work, after downloading the
posts I import newsrc from the same place and sets all the posts I
read at home to 'read'. When I leave work, it all works in reverse.

What a fucking rigmarole. Why not just run your own server, ssh into
it, and always post from the same place?

  6. slrn is my friend. And my server is at home with appropriate firewall
entries to allow me to log on from work (and a few other places..).

  7. Which is fine as long as they are pointing to the same server.
Different servers use different article numbers..

Well, I'm not sure why one would want to use different news servers
from different locations. I've used several news servers over the
years, but only ever one at a time, iyswim.

Carry a news rc file onnastick around with you if that is the issue.

    Otherwise <http://prawnuk.blogspot.com/2008/10/setting-up-leafnode-on-
ubuntu.html> if you want to dick about with leafnode.

  17. Swat I do too. It helps that I have a home DSL connection with real IP
addresses rather than being inside some ISPs NAT cloud.

And a decent firewall at home (Astaro). And control of the firewalls at
    work :)
