Someone mentioned a while ago that they could do one-off engineering jobs
and I have such a requirement. This is a throttle body butterfly, but unlike
most, this one is a two part affair and it's not circular, its fucking
rectangularISH. Having totally exhausted the spares world and discovering I
can only buy the part if I buy a complete inlet manifold at the same time
for a mere 600 squid, I thought it best to talk to the customer before
spending his cash. Turns out, my customer isn't wadded to the extent that
paying 600 quid for what amounts to a pair of farty little piece made from
injection moulded plastic isn't a real option. Being a pikey fucker.

The butterfly itself is rectangular, but the outside of the "housing" is
slightly off kilter. I can provide a pic or more to anyone who thinks they
    could help.

    Cheers

See if anyone can do you a laser scan and rapid prototyping job.

We discussed that, but the man would prefer the items chomping out of ali,
as the plastic wears too rapidly.

*If* he's in no hurry (as in, I'm away for the next week and I'll have
some catching up to do on my return).

*If* he (or you) can provide the original, or an accurately dimensioned
    drawing.

Then I might be able to help.

I can't do machining work these days but I'd suggest that unless you
get someone willing to work for peanuts as a favour you'll be looking
at a couple of hundred quids worth of anyone's time.

By the time someone's faffed about doing a drawing they can refer to
when they're doing the job, then machining what sounds like a less
than straightforward item it's a few hours work. If it's being done on
a small cnc mill (such as the one WUN owns) you can add another hour
or more for the programming then a few quid for a lump of aluminium.

I'd want what my company pays me for weekend work if I was doing the
work for someone I didn't personally know or wasn't a very good friend
    of a friend iyswim.

Better that than 600 quid and a manifold that's never likely to be needed.
I've never expected anyone to work for peanuts and I'm sure the man will be
happy to pay a reasonable rate. The problem isn't about money per se, it's
about having to buy 600 quids worth of stuff for a something when only a
small part of i is needed.
I know exactly what you mean, but you seem to be making the assumption I
want the job done for free, which isn't the case.

    He's in no hurry sir.
I can povide you with the original, it's sat here staring me in the phizzog.
I was contemplating repairing it (bodging it would be a better description)
by installing a ball bearing to take the slack out, but it'll alwys be crap.
I (and he) will be forever in your debt if you can.

If I can have a snail mail addy, I can fling the original in a jiffy bag and
send it off. It *will* fit in your new tralier too :)

I used to get asked to do 'homers' all the time when I had access to
machines and I never asked for money or beers for doing the work if I
knew the person wanting the work done. If it was a "bloke down the
pub" type request then I usually turned the work away rather than make
someone wait until I had time to do the job.

In reality I find it easier to refuse work than to take cash for
something I've done in my spare time and the biggest reason is that I
can usually earn more at work and if I make a **** of the job I still
get paid and don't have someone bitching about me.

No promises at *all*, but I'll email my address. Worst case, if I can't
do anything, I'll post it back.

    Eventually...

If you email it here, some daft pillock might actually get round to
    letting you have that microfiche.

    Probably.

I have a similar situation with painting, where I'm more than happy to help
someone I know out, but "homers" don't work that well when you work for
    yourself. Every job's a "homer".

If it was a "bloke down the
I've done that a time or two myself.
If I make a **** of a job when I'm "working", I don't get paid for it (not
that I actually get paid anyway, but that's another story) although I do it
again 'til it's right and not get paid again :) I try not to **** up too
often, as you can imagine, coz I actually detest doing the same job twice
for ANY reason. I don't mind doing two identical jobs back to back, but not
    the*same* one iykwim.

This part I need making is to try to permanently remove the problem I've got
.. The guy's a good bloke, but we've almost taken over all the maintenance on
his car (used to be just the body and bling stuff)but this throttle
body/manifold issue is sending me up the fucking wall.
