It's a good opportunity for him to pick up a basic motorcycling skill. I've
known guys for whom bumping has been their standard starting method. Long
    term. On road bikes.

FFS I've seen Dodger bump the Wing: nonchalant trundle down the road and hop
    aboard...

I bumped my ZZR1100C2 in Fleet services car park alone, when the battery
ran dry. It was difficult because I couldn't select 2nd.

Kwakers will go into 2nd okay if you roll it along a bit while hooking up
    the gearshift.

The Drifter would do it at a walking (actually, paddling along) pace. The
Z200 does it rocking to and fro.

Un morceau de gateau, as they say.

My worst bump starting experience[1] was trying to get Gibbo's XS250
going at the Bol in 2001. Twenty minutes of pushing him around the
campsite to no avail, then the little oik changed the plugs, and it
started on the button. Which "didn't work", apparently.

[1] Until I bought the KH500, anyway. Trying to release the clutch
while holding on the thumb operated spring loaded clutch was not an
    ideal situation.

Bollocks. It's about accumulated momentum. Given a level surface, you
could get a Wing or a ZZR or whatever started, with Laura pushing.
    One-handed.

I've had Sarah push-start my old Beetle, back in the days when she weighed
    very little more than Laura.

In fact, you v. Laura, GoldWing, level playing field. Possibly the Black
Horse car park. Repeated starts until one pusher collapses.

A very stylish move. Fr Jack and I both felt privileged to have the
    opportunity to witness it.

Push a Wing round the BH car park for long enough and you will be a sweaty,
15 stone bloke in leather, even if you were 16 or 17 stone to start with.
You're missing out on a whole world of fun. Fit, latex-clad pusher girls?
I'm surprised I can't convince you that this is a good thing.

I'm sure Veggie would know some girls who'd be up for it. In fact, I could
see him staging something of the sort for the cameras. Total nubiles, latex
catsuits, trainers, gloves, cute baseball caps. Bunch of greebos queueing
    up to be bump-started...

Don't know the design at all but this could be a starter motor clutch

Do you have to be 15 stone to participate? I mean, it's not a problem
    - I'll lend a hand to this worthy cause, but I'll have to get on the
    all-pie diet pronto.

    You were right. Sort of.

The battery *seemed* to be OK from the multimeter readings he gave me,
but it turns out it was more than a little past it's best.

This, combined with some badly corroded connections on the starter meant
it would only start with a freshly charged battery.

Thanks for all the suggestions, he's sorted now.

    Cheers.

I wasn't having a go at you, I was referencing the previous stipulation
of 15 stone blokes. However, if the oversized glove fits...
