Paging the mechanical people - sort of urgent.

There's a pre-amble to this, but if you'd like to cut to the chase I've
    marked it <The Chase>

Anyway, the other week I kept mentally nagging myself to get my chain
properly cleaned and adjusted, rather than just squirting a bit of lube on
    every morning or two.

Then the snows came and I put the bike in the garage for a couple of days,
thinking I would get the chain done while it was in there.

Then I had a days holiday and a weekend sorting out widening my driveway and
thought I would find time to do my chain, but didn't.

Then I had my foot surgery and a week off work, which would _surely_ give me
    time to do the chain.

Then, because I still had stitches in I couldn't drive or ride, so I was
getting lifts, but forgetting about the bike.

My stitches are now out, I can take the bike to work tomorrow ... so I
_really_ had to get the chain sorted tonight.

By "chain" I now mean "long string of rust that connects gearbox to rear
    wheel".

Anyway, I've been out getting an nice inspection light sun-tan for the past
couple of hours, going at my chain with toothbrush, oily rag, paraffin,
    chisel, etc.

    <The Chase>

It appears I have a couple of totally frozen links in the chain. They're
slightly off flat and totally immobile. From their positions on the chain
I'd guess that one was round the front sprocket and one the rear when I
slung the bike in the garage and left it.

I've stuck the bike on the paddock stand for the night and soaked the chain
in lube, in the hope that they'll free up. I'm not _that_ bothered if they
don't, because the chain was near the end of its life anyway and this
weekend is as good a time as any to fit a new one, but ...

I really would like to ride to work tomorrow. It's only a short journey (30
mile round trip) and I don't generally go over 110ish.

Is it simply suicide to ride with a chain that has frozen links (assuming
they don't loosen up overnight)? Am I being a twat? Should I bite the
bullet and take the <shudder> car to work tomorrow?

    Anyone? Anyone at all?

Take the car. You stand a good chance of breaking the chain. If the
chain does break you stand a good chance of damaging the crankcases and
    you don't want that.

Fecked, and you ought to know

Y Not fit a new one NOW?
    MPH OR KMH?
Alternatively get u pearlier and stay alive when the chain snaps. OR ride
    slower
    It's YOUR life.

Um, because it's quarter to 11 and I don't have a new chain just lying
    around in the garage.
    MPH, obviously.
I think I'd rather not be on a bike with a snapped chain, really.
True, but my wife and daughter might see that as a bit of a selfish
attitude. I'll take the car, eh?

Wot the nice bloke said. I snapped the chain on the ZZR when it had
frozen links. I was lucky, mine went straight out the back. It could
quite easily have smashed the crankcases.

Ah. I had a similar problem with the Wing's front brake.

I knew on the way back from France that the pads were shot.

So I slung it in the garage, and forgot about it.

Having fitted half the new plugs, and resealed the silencer joint [1],
I decided to change the pads.

    Off with the disc cover...

    Out with the caliper pins...

    Out with the caliper bolts...

    Off with the caliper...

The pads remained, attached to either side of the disc. :(

    Reach for adjustable multi-tool...

    Bang. clank. :)

Strip caliper...polish up pistons...loadsa[2] silicon grease and
copaslip, sling it all back together.

    Luvvly.

[1] With a nice section made out of Mr Heinz's finest.
    [2] Not really. Just "some".

I may well do - I've just been out to check and the chain seems fine - a
good clean and a night soaking seem to have sorted it out.

Then again, I may have used up all of my chain related luck with my last
    one.

  15. Yeah been there mate - couple of times. Once half way through a 600
race on my CBR at Snetterton the chain started jumping over the
sprockets in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears - Obviously something wasnt right
chain-wise but I had to carry on cos I was in 3rd place - amazingly it
held out to the end of the race. Afterwards, inspection of the chain
showed it only had about 20% of its rollers left and the rear sprocket
    was missing 4 teeth.

Also, on my old R1 I ran the chain for so long it lost several rollers
and evetually snapped a link side-plate in half. I was 5 miles from
work when it happened. I stopped, looked at the chain, realised the
problem, contemplated calling the RAC and thought bollocks to that and
carried on. I made it to work and nipped round to a local bike shop at
lunchtime and had a new chain fitted.

    the inside.
