Since I'm still in a sorting the plumbing mood - next on the list is to
get a more efficient boiler (current one is 20+ years old)

What say the foak for the best/most reliable makes?

Oil is pretty much still the only option unfortunately.

One day I may go GS heatpump but that involves more work than I'm
prepared to do at the moment.

    Had a version of this
    http://www.worcester-bosch.co.uk/homeowner/products/oil-boilers/greenstar-heatslave-1218
at the family pile in Herefordshire.

It would've been a previous version without the Greenstar condensing
bollocks. We had the optional timer fitted.

The system of holding several litres of pre-heated water worked well.
It wouldn't keep up at full mains pressure but we never found it a
problem. We had an electric shower so nothing in the house needed
    high pressure hot water.

In the 8 years we used the thing, only 1 part failed, the fuel pump.
As that is a mechanical part I thought that was not too bad.

Geoff will probably come along in a while to tell you W-B quality has
gone to shit since the introduction of the condensing bollocks.

Well, yes they have gone downhill a bit

but W-B seem to be the fitters choice because

    a) they don't break down as soon as the fitter has left,

    b) parts are reasonably priced (FSVO)

    c) their technical support are actually helpful

So, that would be my suggestion too

I'm guessing that you're wanting somehing compact and limited-scope,
such as the gas jobbies in most UK houses, but if not, and you're
looking at something more substantial, Veissman

Yup, Viessman gave a good reputation, but are not so common in the UK

I'd love to patent it however truth is stranger than fiction:

    www.hyperionpowergeneration.com

It's a really cracking idea and a distributed network of these would save
hugely on transmission losses. Though we might need to exterminate the
Prawns first. See it's a Win Win proposition.

In all seriousness it wouldn't be at all hard to make them Raghead proof but
still accessible. FOAD bunker with 100 ton rolling door.

And of course I want one of these in the driveway

That's about the tenth time you've used that expression - is it just
you, or has it now taken on a new meaning across the UK?

And what do you mean by it anyway?

Ah it harks back to talk of the film District 9. I think you need to see
that for it to have meaning. And I refer to the more radical fringes of the
    followers of Islam.

Do you think they will be allowed to deploy them anywhere in the USA or
indeed overseas in African countries ;o)

Oh. Well, I'm doing a lot of air travel at the mo, so am actually well
up on latest releases, but that one has so far unappealed enough that
I know nothing about it. I don't doubt it'll be on tomorrow's flight
to SFO. Is it actually worth watching?

For someone that doesn't like violent films with lots of people

Well thanks for that synopsis. IMDB says "An extraterrestrial race
forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly finds a
kindred spirit in a government agent who is exposed to their
    biotechnology."

So maybe it'll be one worth at least dozing through.

First half's an interesting character study. Second half is just a
