My email service from purplecloud has been bouncing incoming messages since Friday evening. Any email to my address gets a reply with a subject of "failure notice", and the following body: "Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mx01-dublin.purplecloud.com. I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out." I've raised a ticket with purplecloud, but not heard a dicky bird. Their status page says everything is ok. Anyone got any ideas? -- Champ ZX10R | GPz750turbo | GSX-R 600 racer My advice as your attorney is to buy a motorcycle To email me, neal at my domain should work.
Hmm, I just emailed myself from my Gmail address to my purplecloud address and it went straight through. Haven't used qmail in a while but my recollection is that this would suggest one of two problems; one, you're trying to send an email to a non-existant recipient or two, someone fucked up the configuration and you've fallen off the edge of the world, as far as they're concerned. I'm sure they've mailed you back that everything's OK. Move you hosting to somebody you can contact via ukrm, who happens to have a machine near Telehouse?
Well, my email addressed existed just fine on Friday morning. Yersh. I can access the purplecloud config/control panel, and everything looks just fine. heh. I even included my work email address on the ticket for them to use. Not sure what you're on about. Purplecloud have been perfect up til now, and provide what I want at the right price. We'll see how this is resolved. -- Champ ZX10R | GPz750turbo | GSX-R 600 racer My advice as your attorney is to buy a motorcycle To email me, neal at my domain should work.
So until the Saturday weekly maintenance came along, basically... Fair enough. But the mail system config is likely to be a few layers removed from the control panel. If the two aren't talking you're screwed. I have to put in "Timo's Hosting Service" spam from time to time. Web/DNS/Email hosting, to be precise. I hope you'll get it resolved quickly, loss of personal email tends to be a bit of a pain in the arse.
Yeah, that was my guess, but I've done a few checks and I can't see that I've broken either. Unless I've received some enormous spam in a DoS attack. -- Champ ZX10R | GPz750turbo | GSX-R 600 racer My advice as your attorney is to buy a motorcycle To email me, neal at my domain should work.
Thanks! Bizarrely, the alias I have set up for neil@ seems to work fine. -- Champ ZX10R | GPz750turbo | GSX-R 600 racer My advice as your attorney is to buy a motorcycle To email me, neal at my domain should work.
That, or your account has been the recipient of a large number of 'backscatter' emails from other people's spam attempts. Unfortunately there are a few server admins out there who think that bouncing spam to the (usually forged) sender address is a really good idea. A quick look at my server logs suggests that someone out there has been fairly active doing that. Someone hand out some fucking brains to these people...
It's working again now! Rejoice! No bloody obvious reason, tho. It isn't a good idea, for the reason you list. -- Champ ZX10R | GPz750turbo | GSX-R 600 racer My advice as your attorney is to buy a motorcycle To email me, neal at my domain should work.
None at all as I'm not a purplecloud customer... but if I may railroad this thread, has anyone transfered a domain into them, and used one of their web/email packages off it? If so is it hassle-free, and what's the likely outage period during the cutover[1]? [1] current domain just forwards to gmail
Domain 1: hassle-free, took a couple of days, got an email to say it was complete. Job done. No noticeably outage period. Domain 2: still on-going. The domain got to them last week (I can see this in the whois info), but they've not updated the nameserver info. I sent a ticket on Friday. Still not heard anything, still not fixed. So currently out for 6 days. I've never been disappointed with their service before, but am at this time.

Having said all that, I've just[1] got a response to say it's all gone through. [1] That is, I just checked my email. The email itself was sent 5 minutes before I posted my message.
