Wouldn't it be simpler to buy a 10p box of matches?

My thoughts too, it looked good, yes, but how many people carry wirewool
    and a 9v battery ?

It also works very well with angle grinder sparks.

I had a YTC moment and nearly lost the entire garage[1], just a few
weeks ago, through not knowing just how flammable wire wool is.

[1] Might have taken the house with it, too.

"i did this =o 2 thinks to watch out for.... dont do it too long the
battery gets extremely hot o_O woops. and dont touch the steel wool
accidently while touching with the battery.. its like dripping raw
aluminum off a saudering iron onto your finger"

i had that a few years ago, a new pack of 0000 grade steel wool i had bought
for using polishing bowls i was turning on my then new lathe,

sharpened a gouge on the bench grinder, sparks set the steel wool on fire,
which like a twat i had left behind the grinder, still in it's paper sleeve,

i chucked it on the floor, finding no water to put it out with and not
needing a piss just then, i grabbed the air line and tried to blow the
smoldering wool out with 120psi of compressed air.

sounded and looked not unlike a oxy cutter, i then spent the next hour
searching the garage for glowing embers that had been blown everywhere.
