Throttle response on the old '98 ones:

just off idle mine's very sharp when the throttle's just opened if the
engine's spinning more than a few thousand RPM. Sharp enough to upset
the chassis if I've just tipped it into a tight corner and want to
wind on the power - I either grit my teeth and ever so carefully try
to east the throttle open without it twitching (which rarely works, or
I get on the power very late), or enter the corner in a higher gear
    and lose drive.

It's not good when the engine's cold, too; trying to dial in jsut
enough revs to pull away smoothly is tricky.

So, do they all do that Sir, or do I need to poke around the carbs?

    To be fair to it, I've done 3-4K miles on it and only changed the oil;
I've never even bothered checking the throttle balance.

Err, which reminds me: major service at 24K miles, yes?

I'm sorry, I'll read that again:

It's pretty linear *except* on the transition from fully closed to
slightly open, at which point it's pretty much an on-off switch.

All the litre bikes I've owned do this to some degree, but nothing
like as bad as the R1.

No, no codes, and the EXUP seems to be working - I did check & adjust
it shortly after I bought the bike.

I guess then it just needs a good service: perhaps the carbs are out
of balance (idles OK though) or maybe the idle mixture needs looking
at. It'll be due a service in about 1K miles. It's useful to know that
    it isn't a known quirk.

Wild guess - the butterfly pivots are a bit worn or something's not
adjusted properly, so the vacuum's holding the butterflies closed until
you move the throttle past a certain point, at which... err... point
the butterflies flick open further than they would normally do during
    the transition.

Heh. It could simply be a difference in riding style that shows it up
for me. It's only a serious irritation on tight, slow corners.

I'll have a good poke around when I service the thing.

Thanks, I'll experiment a bit more I think. I did find it a bit flat
coming out of Russels at Snetterton in err, I guess it was second.
Could be that my 'tight slow corners' are slower than yours so it's
further out of the power band, or maybe I'm just used to a V-twin's
    easy grunt.

Heh. I'm pretty average speed-wise, so you'd have to be at least
averagely shit to be slower than me.

Hmm, listen to cornering advice from a Manx GP racer, or... take up
his kind offer to tell him to **** off. Both have their attractions
    :)
Does this imply overlapping the throttle and brakes, though? Otherwise
it seems at first as if cracking the throttle would result in the same
problem, but pretty much at maximum lean.
This is, in fact, what I do. I tip it in on a closed throttle, then
roll on the power to accelerate and sort of 'balance' the bike.
First attempt o the Guzzi wasn't too encouraging, but maybe I was
being a bit hamfisted. The weekend beckons.

Didn't you do this stuff at school then? I thought everyone did.
And it's been discussed in some detail on here many times in the past.
Google groups shows many such discussions, although I suspect that
Eiron may be too thick to use it...

The lesson to learn today is, there's more grip available in the tyres
than you think. There's _always_ more grip available than you think.

Is the right answer[1], & I've got the scuff on the MV's fairing to
    prove it.

[1] Unless the tyres are Mich T66s, which had fewer grip than anyone
expected, but were oh so progressive when they surrendered.
