Come on then, if you wanted to take advantage (if such a thing exists)
of this weather, how would you go about protecting your SLR?

There appear to be a few items on the likes of ebay for 'twixt a fiver
and a pony, but are they all just glorified plastic bags with an
    elastic on the front?

Yesterday it absolutely poured down, and I used my waterproof lightweight
coat over my head as an old fashioned photographers cape, with just the lens
    hood poking out.

I got some very odd looks, but it all stayed dry.

Also, as per a very old post of mine, I've still not come across a proper
umbrella that doesn't require any hands.

I want someone to invent one that you wear like a rucksack - I'm sure
someone here could knock 'em up and sell them. Weld one to an old metal
frame. I suppose I could try cable-tying one around my chest.

Speaking as someone who's a little taller than average, if someone does
I'll hunt them down and kill them.

People tend to get funny when you grab the umbrella rib that's about to
remove an eye and twist it into a safe shape.

    +1

If umbrellas had ribs that curve down and not out, they would be much
    safer.

My 40D is meant to be weatherproof at the memory and battery compartment, I
tsill wouldn't want to test it. Your camera has no weatherproofing at all.

AFAIAA, only the 5D and 1D models offer any sort of weatherproofing so it might
be an idea to invest in one of them. Of course then you have to buy L glass if
    you want weatherproof lenses.

My mate got a plastic tube about 3' long for a bath drain from B&Q and just
sticks this into a normal day bag, and uses a straight handled fishing
brolly with the handle dropped into the tube. Because the tube's long
enough the brolly stays pretty much in the right position, so long as he's
not actually jumping about too much .. ;)

The day bag doubles as a camera bag for extra lenses, sandwiches etc.

Thats what I assumed, erring on the side of caution and all. And even
with the 40D as you say, its not worth the risk.
L series lenses, I wish. those links though show good products but for
my use I am beginning to think one of the cheapo ones from ebay may
    well be adequate.
Of course it's actually dried up today up here FFS.

PS did you get my email about the ftp settings, ie I cant access them?
