I believe that is fixable with a kit from dynojet though?

  6. Hope so. I think BMW's own literature rates it at 39mpg at 75mph or
    something.

    Not my money!

I fail to see what anyone would see in such a machine.

Collectibility man, FFS you own a 750 Turbo you must understand the concept.
The BMW club being a relatively well heeled bunch.

I understand the concept of owning a bike I want that might (just
    might) go up in value.
If you're talking about it as an investment, I can think of a few
other places I'd rather put my money. Take up less garage space, too.

If that had come up a few months back, I may have been persuaded to buy
    it.

But then I'd have ridden it, not tucked it away as an 'investment'.

  11. You'd have been disappointed, not least by the short gearing. Top whack
    is about 105.

Thing to do is replace the rear drive box with the one from the naked
    R80.

You think it would pull a higher gear with such a gutless engine and an enormous fairing?

I think my 91 R100RT mono does a bit better than the 80 at around 50
mpg. It even does similar when two up, loaded and towing (sometimes
    going slightly slower). ;-)

    I've seen 250 miles on a tank.

We generally abide by the speed limits and when loaded, towing and
touring (our main use for our bikes) are not in a rush in any case
    [1].

We aren't fast as in outright speed or mad acceleration but do
generally like to make good progress (whilst staying within our and
the machines limits). Our holiday would end real quick if either of us
chucked our bikes down the road. Enjoying the ride being a big part of
the holiday. If we wanted to go racing we would book a track day (we
    don't so we won't).

But then I've never wanted to be a 'petrol head' nor own an Alfa.

[1] You now know what the RT brakes are like, imagine an extra 100 kg
pushing you when you brake ...

MPG may depend on how worn the Bings are, and how they are set up. I
went from 48 to 59 MPG after putting in new new needles & jets, and
cleaning out the air galleries properly. Same riding style.

My RT only has 35K on the clock so in BM terms I guess that's quite
    low.

SteveH would assume you were just riding slower of course. ;-)

  18. enormous fairing?

It redlines easily in top, so yes, but the main point is it would make
top gear crusiing a bit more relaxed and economical.

Yes, low for the engine, but not necesarily for the carb needles & jets.
I've seen recommendations to replace them at around 35KMi on R100's, and
    20 KMi on R80's.
On my R80, that is true to some extent. If/when I want to go faster I
    can use other bikes . . .

I do find the comments about R80 performance perplexing. I find it's
most enjoyable to ride at about 50-70. It will go faster but it's not -
for me at least - such a pleasant experience. I don't think I've ever
thought "what this bike needs is more power".

Other bikes are as miserable as sin at 50-70, but not the R80.
