Just checked the M25 status on <www.bbc.co.uk/travelnews/surrey>; M25 is
open and reasonably free from traffic. Probably due to difficulties on
    local roads leading onto it.

But that doesn't help me since my flight out of Gatwick later today has
    been cancelled . . .

We've been getting a fair bit down here in France too, and although
it's perhaps less worthy of comment, i.e. less unusual, there's been a
hell of a lot of it, especially for November. Here's our back garden
    this morning http://acenet.ifrance.com/snowy_garden.jpg. The terrace
was completely clear the night before last, so that all fell during
    yesterday.

I was particularly pissed off that I went out mid afternoon and
cleared and salted the drive, but it had settled again, to a depth of
15-20cm, by the time J came home around six-ish. Stopped by nine,
though, and a nice sunny day today, so the drive should clear itself
    pretty soon.

Not that we need it cleared for the VW to get up and down, but the
Peugeot would perhaps struggle if I needed to use it. Mind you, I'd
have to clear the ~40cm of snow off it first...

Heh, almost looks like you've left the cushions on the chairs.
We've had maybe an inch overnight here in the exclusion zone. My son
was well pissed off that he had to go to school.
Thought you were getting rid of the Pug?

Actually East Coast are running pretty well considering the mess around
S Yorks and further north. I've used them every day this week bar one
to get from Grantham to London and today was the first time we've seen a
significant delay into Kings Cross, that was due to traffic at Finsbury
Park. The reduced speed means the revised timetable has added around 20
    minutes onto my journey.

London on the other hand - sheesh - quicker to walk from Kings Cross to
Gutter Lane than take the tube.

Ah, see, I would have though deeper snow on the roads would be more of a
    feature in your vicinity.

Naah, they're pretty good at clearing the main roads quite quickly,
bith in France and Germany. The only one that's ever an issue is our
steep (private) drive, but even then the 4wd+snow tyres don't even bat
an eyelid at 9" or so of fresh. Apparently the ESP light came on a bit
when J drove up last night, which is about the worst noticeable
    symptom :)

Modern 4wd + ESP + winter tyres utterly rock my boat.

Not always, as my epic on the A89 in December 2008 showed.

Seems to me that rail, like a few other things, should be wrapped up in a
Not for Profit company relatively free of political interference in the day
to day but governed in part by People What Know.

Motorways would be in the same bucket.

  17. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Dan L
Admirably. It makes digging a tad tricky, but other than that they're
    fine.

Just come back from a bowling session with one of my Distributors. Snowing like
buggery up their way (SE Ile de France). Bugger all my way (North IdF). It's
    nearly all disappeared.
