We were talking food in the office. One of the team is veggie. She wasn't
too amused when I managed to sneak in the Burnt inquisition. She now has a
better understanding of the life cycle of dairy cattle and its relationship
to milk production. The look on her face was a picture once the penny
finally dropped about the tasty by-product that gives farmers a useful cash
    crop.

  2. That's not entirely true. With regards to eating out, what they do,
they do very well. I haven't had a bad meal out in this country yet.
The cost, however, means that the typically frugal Dutch don't eat out
much, which in turns decreases the market for variety of cuisine and
    elongated opening hours.

Traditional Dutch food, cooked and eaten at home, on the other hand,
would lead one to conclude that the Dutch are in fact culinary savages.
I can't believe you couldn't have found a Shoarma place if you'd wanted.

Having been a Veggie for so long and found myself in circumstances where
giving up was required I see no justification in going half measures or
pretending that modern agriculture is remotely kind or cuddly. The Dutch
    are particularly evil!

asked her if she knew what led to a cow producing milk. Blank expression &
a request for more information followed.

Now, yes one could, 18 years ago, nope.

Say, how did the Hash Houses eventually deal with the smoking ban.

  10. Not enitrely sure, but I believe that the smoking ban applies to
tobacco, and allows for establishments to provide a smoking area (with
    a lot of regulation attached).

So I suspect that hash houses are hash only and are entirely a smoking
    area. Or something.

AFAIK there is no proper butcher in Harlow. Certainly not in the town
    centre.

There is a great Farm Butcher (Farmview) near Tullyhubbert on the
Lisnabreeny/Knockbracken roads junction which I rather miss. TBF it isn't
walking distance from anywhere that matters but it was worth a 10 min drive.

Has anyone mentioned saucepans yet this week?

We have a butcher within walking distance that is also a game dealer.
Unfortunately the fishmonger[1] in the same parade of shops closed years
ago. The temptation, however, is to drive just a little further to
Waitrose and thus kill three birds with one stone.
