I have a week off booked in September that was originally going to be a tour
of Scotland with a bunch of mates. Now it looks like I'll be on my own but
I'm going touring anyway. I will be travelling light (ie no tent). I have
waypoints in Teignmouth and Skye for roughly each end of the week but
virtually nothing in between and I'm starting from Bedfordshire. It'd be
nice to work in a Lands End to John o' Groats but any other suggestions for
must see places or must ride roads would be gratefully received.

JOG is a shithole. The A9 to get there is not a bad road. Loads of camera.

The Borders area is quit nice. DR will be along in a minute to offer his
    services.

My favourite part of Scotland is the Applecross Peninsula. Ride the Pass of
the Cattle. Approach the Peninsula from Kinlochewe as the views down to
    Loch Torridon are stunning.

Fort William makes a nice base as it is surrounded by good roads. I can
look up a couple of B&Bs if you like.

All seconded. Plus the A82 from Glencoe to Bridge of Orchy.

Our favourite route across the borders is through Coldstream.

Agreed, did LEJOG on my Lambretta May '06 in 3 days, fook me that was
hard. Got to JOG and we're all jubilant and wanting a beer, went in the
pub and the landlord / barman was a right arsehole.

40 of us there, beering it up, asked him when he closes, "10pm" he says.
"**** that" I said, "us lot are looking to put some serious cash over
    the counter tonight".

    The reply?

    "10.30".

We fucked off about three quarters of a mile back where theres a pub
and restaurant that fed us and beered us til 3am and were great hosts.
The lightweights stayed in the small B&B opposite, the rest of us
staggered back to our tents were some of us slept through the force 4/5
gale due to copious amounts of guinness and not having bought a
halfords / eurohike childs tent :)

Quite fancy doing it on a proper bike again though one day soon(ish)

    <looks at weather>

    Bedford - John O'Groats - 654 miles
Bedford - the Rhone Alps - 649 miles

    I know which I'd do...

    Unfortunately I'd have to agree.

*If* the weather is good, Scotland can be a glorious place for biking.

Good choice heading over to Skye, that Kyle of Lochalsh road is sheer
    heaven (A87).

One of my favourite roads is Ballater to Blairgowrie (A93), scenery is
fantastic, especially through the Spittal of Glenshee and the roads are
great fun. Give the Queen a wave as you pass Balmoral.
